We all want to see the best deal for Jimmy and the team but what if things were reversed and the 49ers were looking for a QB? How much would you be willing to give up for a 31 year old often injured mid tier QB? Would you even want him? I doubt many Niner fans would be too excited about landing someone like that especially since we've had more than our share of injuries.
Answer: when the QB you get is better than the QB you have.
Now, the value of such a trade will vary from team to team, but someone will not get Wilson, Rodgers, or possibly Carr.
There will be a market, but the above players will have to move first.
Just getting someone better than who you already have isn't going to make your team better if he's injured a lot. You can end up wasting 2 or 3 more years. Would you be excited if the Niners signed Jimmy next year at this stage of his career?
Honestly, that does make a difference. Forget what the fans think. Put yourself in thr position of a.GM or coach entering years 2-4 and you haven't shown much. Or you've built a team that can compete, but QB holds you back. You realize Jimmy ain't reliable, but it isn't Jason Verrett bad. The day 2 pick gets you an immediate starter and any other QB drafted can sit and learn. If Jimmy gets hurt, you have a talented backup. If he's healthy, you'll have a winning record and are in the playoff hunt which is exactly what certain teams need.
Cam Newton, after stinking it up in New England got another shot. QBs are at a premium. We know Jimmy can play and can do so at a high level. His health is the only thing preventing this from being a 1st outright. QBs, even below average ones, go for high picks- remember the Sam Bradford trade?
A coach/GM trying to save their jobs and looking for a QB will look into Jimmy and hedge their bets by getting a rookie in the pipeline. Said move could buy a regime 2 or 3 years if Jimmy continues to win at anywhere near the rate always has won at.
