Trey Lance doesn't need to earn anything. It's his by default due to the last draft. They sat him for a year. I guess a good thing but that was it. It's showtime.

His cap, oh it will go away in a year anyway. Come on man..
This Jimmy crap has really reached it's peak at biting on my nerves.

How is the QB room not weaker? TL and JG is stronger than TL and NS right?

the locker room could turn toxic. keeping jimmy reeks of drama this team does not need. jimmy guys vs trey guys and all the yellow hall of fame lynch jackets and kyles powers of mind control could not stop it once it gets rolling.. keeping a 27 million dollar back up qb is just plain stupid... i know you are a super good homer where everything is right and correct with this franchise.. but you just do not do that stupid kind of s**t

Pros of release

Cap space (we get this anyway in about 10 months when his deal expires)

Cons of release

QB room is weaker (less push for TL to earn the job)
Less protection from TL injury (which somehow he was injured repeatedly last year without much play time)
No possibility of compensation be it trade materializing or otherwise (comp pick)
No control over JG destination; he could sign with SEA tomorrow and start against us 2x (haters like to get cute and put this as a "pro" yet even they know he's way better than D. Lock)

Good post. I'll take the cap space.

If we roll over Jimmy's cap savings until next year, we'll get his cap space next year (which opens up as his deal expires) plus the $25M in cap rollover. So the OP's original premise is incomplete.

What about locker room divided? What about off field distractions having to answer QB questions? How about if Trey struggles in a game having to deal with should we go back to Jimmy questions from the dips**t Grant Cohn? I agree Jimmy is a better backup than just about every back up in the league but it would cause friction for a 2nd year QB who needs to have confidence the team and everyone involved is behind him.

some of the guys who adore lynch and kyle think that we are above a divided locker room. sigh

It's messed up to keep screwing with the locker room with this circus act. Really. Brandon is just one example but it is pretty clear who he supports. The players are probably sick of being asked who to start? Trey needs play time. I am such a fan and such belief he will be a star I can barely stand it BUT NOT THIS YEAR. I really bet his second year of play he becomes a monster. Problem here is a lot fans on this board probably can't accept that and it will another year of whining.

Trey Lance Trey Lance Trey on 3 Trey Lance

Well I like to consider myself as a Huge massive Kyle Shanahan lover. John Lynch is okay. But yeah a divided locker room can happen to any team and I don't want a QB controversy.

I can see a draft day trade, where Jimmy is traded for a pick and a player. Conversely, they can trade him for a conditional pick - the condition being his rehab and ability to play QB. He won't be throwing until after the draft, so they can structure a deal where the 49ers would get a conditional first round if Jimmy is 100% by training camp (or something like that) and if not, the 49ers get a really low pick, possibly a day three pick even if Jimmy takes longer to heal. Personally, I'd give it a 50%/50% chance he's traded around draft day, and more of a 75%/25% traded by the time he's able to throw sometime in (I think) July.

Don't hold you breath. Teams have no reason at all to spend anything for a player they predict to be released at some point.

false...there is a risk you dont get JG if you wait until he is cut

a trade means you guarantee you control his rights

the point of contention is how much do other teams value obtaining the rights to JG

I do not think we will see him get traded until an opening opens up from injury. I think if the team that losses their QB is playoff caliber or Superbowl caliber we will be able to probably get like a 2nd +3rd. If the team that losses their QB sucks then we won't get good compensation.

Until then I do not think he is worth anything. There is just not any openings for him.

This is what we're reduced to, hoping for a team to lose their starting QB to injury? Lean back in your seat and think abut that for a minute. A team would have to be desperate to give anything for Jimmy G. Wow! so much for trade leverage.

keeping jimmy would lead to it. in my opinion. plus keeping a 27 million dollar back up is just dumb
How about if G restructures for 1/2 price as a backup?Would that be considered as a fair deal?

Great deal. Jimmy never sign it. But great for us.

Why not? $12Mish is the going rate for a backup Qb.

We don't know what the biggest factor is for Jimmy. Money? Winning a SB? Being the starter? Could be any of those or all of those.
