Performs what surgery? What procedure did he say it was?
Yes, I have to see the MRI to determine the extent of injury. Anything else is nothing but a wild guess.
BTW Doctors making a prognosis or diagnosis for a patient that they have never examined is HIGHLY frowned upon by the AMA.
Hey man I'm just tossing out what was said...the surgeon said that was his best guess when asked about it. edit: he didn't say for sure it was a "small tear" just that in his opinion it wasn't an extensive tear....
So is the procedure minor, as Lynch contends? That depends, said Dr. Bradford Parsons, the chief of shoulder service at Mount Sinai Health System.
Parsons explained that the capsule is the layer of tissue that envelops the shoulder and contains the ligaments that give the joint stability. He said tears can occur in different parts of the capsule and vary in severity.
"How extensive is the damage?" Parsons said. "One capsule tear can be a tiny, little hole and takes one stitch to fix versus a big capsule tear that's ripped off the bone."
Parsons said Garoppolo's description of how the injury occurred sounded like it was a tear to the back of the shoulder capsule. He said repairing it simply involved stitching the tear back together and that it usually takes four to six weeks to heal. From there, a patient's return to normal activity depends on how quickly the shoulder regains strength and mobility.
As for the current shoulder issue, Parsons cautioned that he doesn't know the details, but said the fact Garoppolo continued playing suggested the tear was not extensive.
"I think if it was a really bad injury in his throwing arm, he would have been in so much pain he might not have been able to throw," he said. "It's not like he's lifting a fork. He's doing high-level, highly difficult, incredible things with speed and accuracy these amazing athletes do."
I can't find the Maiocco article right now...but when I find that I will post the content.
Here's the other reports from guys around the league
"It's complicated because Garoppolo is, of course, recovering from a torn capsule in his shoulder," Rapoport said. "Not a torn rotator cuff but a torn capsule. And there's full confidence that he'll be ready to go in time for the season, not even expected to miss any training camp. But he only had surgery this week, so teams are going to want to know everything they possibly can about the medical."
