If the word we got is true, that Jimmy has a torn ligament in his thumb plus a chip fracture, then there is just no way he can throw the ball where he wants it. Just based on injury hx alone, Trey should start. Jimmy starting because he has the Ram's number…that doesn't count once his throwing hand has significant injury.
I hope Trey doesn't get injured but if he did….i would hope JG would be available but, still, you are asking for a "murkle". (Aka "miracle".)
A think a healthy Jimmy > a healthy Trey Lance.
But - an injured Jimmy < a healthy Lance.
Given what I know about sprains and that he actually injured the bone too, he won't be 100% by this Sunday. Start Trey, let's find out now - before the draft - what he's made of so that we can use the entire offseason to make him stronger via draft and free agency.
No way you can keep Jimmy *and* Deebo *and* Bosa with the 49ers only 12 million under the cap in 2022.
A healthy Trey > A healthy Jimmy
One year too early.
Yeah, I know.

Well not exactly. As an injured part of the team they lost both games in 2018.
You could argue that the last game in 2017 was after they fielded not many of their stars for the bulk of the game.
He also did not play in the win against them in the second half of the season 2020.
The Pats beat them when he was the backup in 2016 but he did not take a snap so you can claim that.
Quarterbacks are not the team but just one part.
He is injured to the point of being a liability when it matters.
Would you stake your life on him being the starter in a win on Sunday?

I didn't say Jimmy has never been on a roster that lost to the Rams. I said Jimmy has never lost to them. He has started against the Rams 5 times, and is 5-0.

Lance. I just have too many concerns with Jimmy's grip and accuracy playing through a torn ligament in his thumb.

My concern with Jimmy isn't that he'll be capable of throwing at the start of the game, it's the 3rd and 4th quarters that concern me.
That thumb won't be 100%. Can it survive a knock without it affecting him as the game goes on? At some point he'll take a sack, get knocked down, instinctively use his hand for something physical.
So the question I'm stuck on is whether we'd be better off going with Trey all the way rather than risking a midgame switch even if all things being equal Jimmy is the better choice right now to start.
I just have serious concerns about Jimmy lasting the game without that thumb becoming a factor.

Yeah, I'm with you, jagged - that thumb is going to become a factor, as the game wears on. I'd rather just start Trey and give that thumb another week of healing (assuming we'll be in the playoffs).

Jimmy is a 49er and they have lost wile he was there. Starting is something you should say. QB's do not play against entire teams by themselves. The statement you made is redundant.
To save you from answering this I can fix it for you.
Jimmy has never been on the losing team while starting against the Rams.

This.
I really don't think he's starting though, Kyle just keeping them guessing. No way is his hand healed enough, especially healed enough to not take hits.

This. Garbs has a long history of playing poorly while injured. Id keep the momentum up with Lance over an injured Jimmy.
