I think it's a combination of niner fans being spread out throughout the country, fans traveling, and the way the "takeover" concept has taken root.
Ive been to home games with a large presence of steelers, packers, cowboys, and even bears and giants fans. The niners weren't traditionally mentioned with those teams as far as "fans who travel well" by the networks/media.
In recent years with Twitter/hashtags etc, the takeover/invasions have shed light on how large of a presence niner fans have in road games.
I can recall the opening shots of FOX's broadcast of the 2013 NFCCG showing a ton of red. The week 1 2014 game at Dallas legitimately looking like 75% niner fans. The superdome shootout had a ton of red. The games at SoFi in recent years. We're definitely up there.

Do we have the best traveling fanbase?

Only if the other team sucks and our team is playing well. That's what differentiates our fans from Packer and Steeler fans. They travel well regardless of their team records and despite how well the opposing team is playing.
we have fair weather fans that disappear completely when the team sucks (see 2003-2010, 2015-2018) then show up in masses when we're a top class team. Also we take over stadiums of other fair weather fan teams eg Carolina, LA, Zona. Won't see a lot of Niner fans at Lambeau, or NY, or Pittsburgh, or New England…

49ers fans dont just travel well, they live everywhere. I remember being stationed in MD, half of the marines in my squad were 49ers fans.
During the season, its pretty easy to get tickets to games. I wouldn't get my hopes up about our fans taking over playoff stadiums, just because of the hyped prices.
I do love how big a fan base we have though. I've moved around a lot and have met plenty of fans in AK, AZ, MD, MO, OR, WA.
It is a huge nationwide fan base that exploded in the 80's and 90's and carries on today. It's a more affluent fanbase so they can afford to travel more compared to some fanbases. But they do travel very well. Maybe the best given what the players say about the Faithful showing up to all their away games, even in other countries.

Yeah that's not true. Our fair weather fans reflect at home games not on the road. I've been going to at least 1 away game a year for the past 15 or so years and the fans have shown up even thru the tough years.

This is my thinking, specifically for people living in the Bay Area that travel or maybe retired tech people.

Problem is that our fans don't know how to tailgate in a timely manner. My cousins stay in the parking lot until midway through the 1st quarter because they bring like seven 1.75 L bottles of hard alcohol and like 30 pounds of meat to grill. They treat it as if it's a wedding reception.
Indian time, I guess. We do have a lot of Indian fans.
This sounds just like my tailgate lol. Down to being Indian, the crown royal bottles, and all the meat.
I make sure to shut down and head out to security lines 30-45 before kickoff, though.

When have GB or PIT stunk up the joint in consecutive seasons?
PIT hasn't had a losing season throughout Tomlinson tenure and they tenure head coaches twenty years at a time. Talk about stability and winning
GB has enjoyed 15 year careers from both Favre and Rodgers consecutively. They've been running the NFCN since forever virtually guaranteed a playoff spot annually
Lets see those clubs lose consistently and then revisit this but your point is noted

We have for a very long time. But the raiders are perpetually screwed for living in Vegas. Everyone who wants to take a vacation is gonna go to Vegas when their team is playing, they're gonna have nothing but away games lol
