DeMeco has gained my respect. Incredible year.

Idk. He didn't cover kupp
The right side of the OL finally caught up with the Niners having Brunskill & Compton there against DL talent like the Rams have. Need to shore that side up this offseason.

Still reeling from yesterday's loss. When the Niners went up 17-7 late in the 3rd, they had all the momentum as they had just before that stopped the Rams on 4th Down. After 17-7, it went downhill with poor play after poor play:

-The Rams very next drive, where if the Niners can shut them down there, the Niners' momentum continues to build. The Rams throw a short pass to Kupp for seven yards and the Niners get a taunting penalty to give them a free 15 yards (can't have that when you have all the momentum - can't give a team like the Rams those free yards when you're trying to finish them off; stupid play).

-Niners then let the Rams march right down the field 75 yards for a fairly quick TD (where their backup TE, Blanton, is making plays - can't have that)...Rams get some momentum right back.

-The Niners' next drive...it starts off well and they get into Rams territory...then the two run calls on 2nd & 1 and 3rd & 2 just killed that drive. Big opportunity wasted to come right back and put some points on the board and re-gain some momentum.

-Next Rams drive, where the Niners are still up by three: Tartt HAS to make that INT right in his hands in a big situation in such a big game...was almost like catching a punt that pass from Stafford was so bad.

-Very next play: They give up a big pass play to Beckham PLUS a free 15 yards on the helmet spear shot by Ward (Ward's usually good about not leading with his helmet...not sure what happened w/ him there). Total yards given up on that single play: 44. Unreal (especially after the previous dropped INT by Tartt).

-The Niners next series with it now 17-17: They get a delay of game? Was a complete WTF moment...and then that drive goes nowhere with JG and the offense just not looking good (the OL wasn't helping much).

-Rams then march down the field for the FG that turned out to be the winning points...Niners' D, as was a theme for a lot of the game, couldn't get off the field in giving up 3rd Down conversions.

-Niners' last possession: More OL troubles, the Rams DL were pinning their ears back (something you don't want w/ a not very good right side OL going against guys like Donald & Miller).

It was a team-wide collapse after they had the 17-7 lead. Giving credit where credit is due, the Rams made the plays to take advantage of the Niners' poor play, and just overall the Rams' O was executing and was on the field for far too long all game.

Going to take some time to get over this loss, no doubt about it. Gotta finish games. This team is battle-tested in big regular season games and playoff games...they've had some good wins and some tough losses. Now, they need to finish big games like yesterday's and I'm already looking forward to next season - I want to see them take that next step.

I know many in this forum have never seen the Niners win a Super Bowl. I've been fortunate to see each of the five SB victories and remember clearly each one and what it took to get those wins. In the NFL, it's never easy and I remember the rough days before the Niners got SB #1...I also remember the tough playoff losses thereafter. But when you do get over the hump and win the SB, to me it's far and away the best feeling as a fan in all of sports and completely worth all the tough times endured. I've always believed you have to stick with this team through the thick and thin, always have hope, as you never know what can happen in any given season when you have good talent and good coaching.

Already looking forward to seeing what the Niners do this offseason and then can't wait for next season to start. Go Niners!

Agreed but the waiting has been excruciating.

You never know how long it'll be until the next shot. Could be next year could be 30 years. You have to win when you get there, and in the past 11 years they've blown 2 Super Bowls and 3 conference championships. Each one seems to sting more knowing that there were five very good chances.

they never just let you off easy; they always twist the knife.

Each one seems to get harder. Just one of those years with a trophy would take away the sting. Instead it's like groundhog day and continually magnifies.

I started watching Niners games around 2001, I wasn't born to see any of Montana and too young to give a s**t during the Young & Rice era. They've had 5 shots at this thing in a 10 year span, you just gotta wonder how many chances they're gonna get until they can finally cash in. It's frustrating

Those years sting more than the 8 years of misery before Harbaugh to be honest. When you expect to be s**tty, you just get numb to it. When the opportunity is there and just within reach and you fall back to zero and starting all over again....that's the brutal part.

Minutes and yards away from a chance to finally win. And they're on the couch with everyone else.

You have to win when you get there. Even just once. They never do.
Pregame Aikman talked about mistakes deciding these types of games. With that spirit let's break it down. What went wrong? Why did we lose? Here are the turning points imo:

Q1 3:28 - 4th and 10 Wishnowsky punts to the LA 3. We punted from the Ram 40. I've long been an advocate of going for it in plus (enemy) territory. A punt is a voluntary turnover, no different than JG lobbing a deep pick. It was a great punt and downed inside the 5, however, the Rams marched right down and scored a TD. They could have done that from the 40 (and it would have actually saved time on the game clock, perhaps giving us more time in the end).

End of 1st SF 0 LA 0

Q2 8:46 - 3rd and 13: 16 yard TD to Cooper Kupp. Aikman with a rare astute commentary. Cover 2 look with Ambry shallow zone and Tartt deep zone. Thomas doesn't get nearly the depth he should leaving Kupp essentially one on one with Tartt huge mismatch TD Rams. With depth Stafford would likely have to check down and odds are it doesn't go for 13 yards. Ryans dialed up the correct play just not executed.

Q2 1:50 - 1st and 10: 2 yard run with Deebo. Gay just missed a deep field goal setting us up at our own 44. We ran with Deebo for minimal gain and elected to run all the play clock. This drive would finish with us spiking on first down at the Ram 24 yard line. Running one play (JG scrambled with no one open). Then we kicked a field goal on third down. We ran out of time on this drive, and would not have if we didn't run all play clock after the first down Deebo run. In fact, without running all play clock to start the drive we likely don't need to waste a down clocking it.

End of 2nd SF 10 LA 7

Q3 1:59 1st and 10: 7 yard completion to Kupp and AAS called for taunting and 15 yards. It would have been 2nd and 3 from the 32. It became 1st and 10 from the 47. There was no visible taunt (unlike Tyreek Hill vs Buffalo which was clearly visible and not called last week).

End of 3rd SF 17 LA 7

Q4 11:23: Mitchell run for 1 yard loss on 2nd and 1. KS then dials up a 3rd and 2 up the gut with the FB run. He then punts on 4th and 2 at the Ram 45. Sometimes when a team is coached tight they start to play tight (see for example Marty Schottenheimer). To me we are coaching a little tight here. The following drive would start with the bomb off the shoulder pads to Tartt. Tartt should have asked Stafford for a better ball, as we all know it is uncatchable if it hits the shoulder pads.

End of 4th SF 17 LA 20

Final verdict an entire game of coaching tight. An option for a 4th down play at the opposing 40. This is no man's land. Too long for a field goal but too short to punt. Punting here set the tone for a tightly called game. We continued this by hedging our bets to end the first half. Rather than giving a drive to JG and attacking we ran clock. Almost as if KS was betting our offense would fail and he didn't want to leave Stafford any time. But our offense didn't fail and we marched down and ran out of time ourselves. The killer was the sequence in the 4th run stuff, run stuff, conservative punt (again KS coaching tight) then dropped INT. Each game we had a deep ball to OBJ which was picked vs the Rams. This was our time for another just didn't happen. Even with the conservative calls we had our chances to win but I did observe the team started to play tight down the stretch.

Going forward I'd like to see us being more aggressive. Going for more 4th downs. When you punt you are telling your offense that I think you guys will fail at this moment so I'm not going to put it in your hands. Let's bet on ourselves not against ourselves. KS I'm sure would love to have chances with our offense on the field on those 4th downs but now it is too late. If we fail there fine we go down swinging. As it stands we went down and didn't take all the swings we could have we punted some of those swings away.

Just getting to the Super Bowl is hard.

Look at Green Bay since they won it in 2010

  • 2011: 15-1, lost Divisional
  • 2012: 11-5, lost Divisional
  • 2013: 8-7-1, lost Wildcard
  • 2014: 12-4, lost Championship
  • 2015: 10-6, lost Divisional
  • 2016: 10-6, lost Championship
  • 2019: 13-3, lost Championship
  • 2020: 13-3, lost Championship
  • 2021: 13-3, lost Divisional

And that's with a QB better then Jimmy.

So why does Kyle have a tendency to go away from his stars, whether it's Deebo or kittle. Or we have seen it when the run game is working, he will go away from it at times.
When the rams needed yardage, kupp is there guy and they went to him.
