***MODS: I ask that you not merge this with the overall Jimmy thread since this could (perhaps) be a place to show a bit of class to a player who helped make SF relevant***
So, it's weird.
Today, I coached my son's flag football team to a tough 25-24 loss this morning, was super excited by the Bengals winning the AFC, and like you, just endured the Niners' season ending. But for whatever reason, I'm OK. Don't get me wrong, it SUCKS to lose this game. Maybe sometimes the other team just played better. Regardless...
People are hating on Jimmy right now. I see it in the main Jimmy thread. And that's fine, it's their right.
But on a day where LA bottled up the run, Jimmy played a clean game. Got away from pressure quite a bit, took check downs, was responsible for both TDs, but didnt have quite enough, or much of a chance, those last 2 drives. And the INT at the end? He was trying to make something happen. It is what it is.
Jimmy probably will get traded in the offseason. And that's the right move going forward, for the cap, retaining players, and bringing in FAs. (I do hope they find a seasoned, competent backup for Lance...just in case)
Looking back on the last 5 seasons, Jimmy undoubtedly make SF relevant again...and showed how irrelevant they were without him:
2017: 5-0 after the trade
2018: injured most of the year
2019: Super Bowl
2020: injured and, to me, tried to come back early on a bad ankle to salvage the season, but the team was an injury-riddled sh*t show anyway
2021: played through an injury that basically shuts every other QB down and helps the team get to the NFC title game
Is he a top 10 QB? No. Is he a bottom 10 QB? I don't think so. He's somewhere in the 15-20 range. He's flawed, for sure. But he's also someone you can win with.
Because he's also a leader who the team loves playing with and for and has pushed through injuries when he had every right to shut himself down. Which again, show's leadership. I give him an immense amount of credit for how he handled himself this year after Trey was drafted. That matters to teams, players, and coaches.
I didnt expect 2019, and it was a great ride. After 8 games this season, I didnt expect SF getting this far. And yes, it SUCKS not to win it all. It sucks a lot.
We can play the "What If?" game a ton the past 5 years, but it ultimately doesn't matter. All we know for sure is that when Jimmy was healthy/played the vast majority of the season, SF was in the final 4 or final 2. Was it all him? Of course not. But it happened under his QB watch.
Wherever Jimmy ends up, he'll make that team better. He'll get a new contract and he deserves it. After all, there are only 32 starting QB jobs on the planet and he is, without a doubt, one of the 32 best QBs.
Jimmy leaves SF better than when he arrived, and of course Kyle and John had a big hand in that. The mentorship Jimmy provided to Trey will be huge moving forward (even if most was Trey learning by watching) and hopefully the QB transition is smooth and successful.
Im not a Jimmy defender or apologist. Im excited for Trey to start next year. Even after this loss, I can just look back with a level head and say "Thanks, Jimmy, and good luck."

I will miss the leadership of Jimmy G, toughness, and somewhat late game miracles. Someone will trade for him and I hope he does well elsewhere.

Jimmy is what he is, we've known this for years. We gone as far as we can go with him. I love the guy and have no animosity towards him.

I have no strong feelings one way or another. Same when Alex Smith left.
