Agreed. Middle tier safeties never get what they expect on the open market. Tartt could be brought back on a very manageable deal - unless I'm underestimating how other GMs view him.
Let's hope other GM's remember him for his dropped Int and Injury Issues. We should be able to re-sign him on the cheap then.
Bring back Tartt - but, just as a backup.

No 1st round picks for seven years. Wait for the NFL to put the Super Bowl in our home stadium again. Come up with some super annoying chant from our PA guy. And after we win the SB with Prescott, Shanny and Bosa both say they are thinking about retiring. This is how it's done nowadays.
I see what you did there

I don't understand what I'm missing when it comes to Verrett. Consensus seems to be that everyone here wants him resigned. Consensus also seems that everyone wants Ford gone. What is the difference between them? Both are great when they're on the field, but neither can find their way there. I'd be curious to see which has actually played more for us. I get that Ford is more $, but why do people want to keep throwing good $ after bad at guys who have little chance of playing?

I wouldn't sign either of them.

The difference is that Ford was given a large multiyear deal then he started being a frequently injured player taking up a sizeable chunk of cap. That is not the case with Verrett due to him not having a large multiyear deal with SF. The reason why I'd like Verrett to come back, assuming his rehab went well, is positional need.
The way they are injured is also different although you can argue it doesn't matter. Ford has some chronic, nagging injuries whereas Verrett has had severe, significant injuries where rehab can get him back on the field. I don't think Verrett would command much money to come back and I'd be willing to commit a few million. The argument against having him back also makes sense. Time to let the young'uns play because even if Verrett has a nice 2022 season, he is not a part of the long term future due to age.

Bring him back on a cheap deal, and draft his future replacement whilst we're at it.

Obviously, get as much as possible for Jimmy. So far, Pittsburgh, Miami, Wash & Indy look like players for him. His value could rise, especially if it becomes a bidding war, which is very possible, particularly if Rodgers & Wilson stay put. So, let's say they get a 1st rd pick. Use that to land the best CB on the board.
Let Tomlinson walk. Yeah, he arguably had his best season. However, he'll likely be offered a sizeable contract in FA. Put Banks at LG, his natural position. Just as Trent Williams made LT better, he should make AB better. The cap space they'd save with this maneuver could be sizeable. Cut Compton...decent in run-blocking, but horrible in pass pro.
Either draft a topflight C/OG or grab someone like Evan Brown (6-3, 320) from the Lions. He filled in admirably for starter Ragnow. Mack could easily retire, but even if he doesn't he could mentor Brown.
Give Jaylon Moore every opportunity to start at RG. Brunskill's a good OL to come off the bench, not necessarily to start. With McGlinchey back next season, the OL could become younger and pretty talented.
Cut Ford, don't re-sign Verrett. Don't re-sign K'Wuan. Cut Norman.
Draft Pitre, S from Baylor. He's a terrific player. Draft 2 topflight CB's. Playoffs showed the secondary's weaknesses. On the fence WRT Tartt...excellent when on the field, but he's been hurt a lot.
Sign Charger RB Justin Jackson. Coach Lynn drafted him and likes the kid. Versatile RB who should be a good fit. Maybe cut Wilson, although I like him. Definitely let Mostert go. Sermon has yet to show he's a keeper, but think he can be.
Re-sign Key, D.J. Jones, Willis & Givens. With Kinlaw back next season, our DL should be lights out. Cut Hurst & Street.
Upgrade the TE position. After Kittle, there's not much. Maybe sign Bengals' Uzomah.
Sign QB Tyrod Taylor. Quality b/u and a guy who'd be a good mentor for Lance. Cut Sudfeld.
In the draft focus should be on secondary, OL, pass rusher, LB, QB (to develop), RB (UDFA), WR and/or TE if they don't sign a vet.
I'm sure there's some more moves to be made, but this is a decent start.

Ford? He played 6 healthy games for us in 4 years. Much more disastrous contract than Jimmy G.
How much do we save when he is cut?

only difference i would do here is resign Tomlinson in exchange for Key. need to have consistency on the oline and get a ER in FA or draft.

Resign DJ Jones and Mostert.
Sign Ryan Jensen and Justin Reid.
Get a 3rd round pick and a CB for Jimmy.
Draft depth.

Yeah, uh, you are aware of the drop off in performance from CBs with age, yes? Josh Norman used to be good. Biggest waste of money we had this year. Even if Verrett can find a way to play a full season, what makes you think he can do it at a high level? Nah, let him walk. Let's focus on younger players who don't have a history of collecting a paycheck for not playing.
