Dumb decision. I'd expect Trey to make those types of bone-head "rookie-ish" mistakes, but not Jimmy. With plays like this, I wonder if the drop-off to Trey will even be demonstrable or if it even exists at all.

Collective team fails that cost us every L this year, reared its ugly head again in this big game.

But it's still super encouraging like every game save for one, we were right there in it until the end. And just one less penalty, one less INT, one less poor play call, one less pass protection fail, etc...we win. Simple as that.

What bothers me the most going forward is definitely the clock management on the next to last drive.

Yeah dude. I kept a collective grocery list of issues that would cost us games. Each game we'd improve upon, stay par or fail even worse and clock management was certainly one of those issues on my list. This particular game almost all of these boxes were either par for the course or failed even worse than normal.

Team Weakneses:
  • Defensive pass interference
  • Defense can't generate TO's
  • Defense fails late in games and in quick fashion
  • Defense instantly gives up a score immediately after going up double digits
  • 3rd down pass defense
  • Defense piss poor tackling (and technique) at times
  • Offense missed a big opportunity/play
  • Offensive TO's lead to points the other way
  • Offensive TO's take points off the board
  • Offensive penalties at crucial times usually in the RZ or backed up (false starts, holdings, delays, etc.)
  • Receiver drops
  • Boneheaded team penalties at key moments
  • Kyle is bipolar with play calling
  • Kyle struggles with clock management at times
  • Kyle gets too cute or too conservative at times
  • Slow starts and/or poor second half adjustments
  • Must run 35+ times to have a chance to win
  • Unit pass protection collapse in predictable passing situations (includes RB's, FB and TE's)
  • Too many key injuries at key positions at key times
  • SpecialED teams

Sup homie? You got my draft OL thread up yet?
Too soon for me. You guys have fun...
Seems most people are blaming the loss on Jimmy G. We were leading 17 - 7 at the end of the third quarter. What happened to the defense. Maybe they should get some of the blame for the 4'th quarter letdown. Keeping in mind, I think the whole organization had a great run this season and gave the fans a ton to be grateful for!

Actually Jto Sullivan talked about it in a recent video he did how he prefers the timeout to the 5 yards because that timeout theoretically should give the team a couple of more plays near the end of the game. I think the idea works if you have a guy that is capable of converting when the offense is behind the chains.

I was thinking to myself during the game, like is Jimmy G not allowed to call time outs? instead we take the delay of game.

what happened is that KS10 was so amazed of how Kupp was getting the ball left and right that he forgot that our rookie DC could have taken an advice from him regarding doubling up Kupp because Obj was on the sideline....

instead of this, KS10 just started wondering " HOW AWESOME MY OFFENSE WOULD BE IF I CAN FIND ME ONE THOSE BLONDE " ..

You think 17 points is sufficient to win NFL games? An extremely difficult ask of the defense while the offense goes 3 & out after 3 & out. I don't only blame Jim but the proof is in the pudding: he had an extremely mediocre game

The only thing positive i could say is Kyle lost to the eventual super bowl champion, and not by much either. This team and Kyle has been so close the last two playoffs. I think if Trey develops to where if its just even half of what 49er fans expect of him in 2022 - the third playoff time could be the charm.

Back in November, there was a stat that showed Cooper Kupp was double-covered at a league-high 38.9% of the time, and still was open 55% of the time. No one in the league was able to stop him this year.

You say we should've run more double-coverage, but double-coverage means having your CB cover them in man coverage and assigning a safety to play over top and specifically stay in front of the WR's route. Double-coverage specifically takes away deep routes from the WR and allows a CB to better focus on short/intermediate routes because he has help over top... Yes, we gave up two TD's to Kupp, but I think what was just as killer was that over the course of the ENTIRE game, the Rams were beating us on 3rd and mediums, and 3rd and shorts. Kupp's Average Depth of Target was 7.4 yards. The Rams converted 11/18 on third down. And it wasn't just like it was one guy--- OBJ had 100+ and their Tight End had 5 for 57. The Rams were mixing it up very well and I don't think there was a slam-dunk adjustment that could've been made, other than to just better anticipate the playcalling.

I felt like Demeco Ryans tried his best to mix up his coverages, but ultimately, we just didn't have the personnel to stop them in the short passing game, which I think is very much a credit to their coaching staff, Kupp/OBJ, and Stafford for getting the ball into some very tight windows. To be honest, this is the gameplan they should've run the first two times we played them.

I get it, you feel Shanahan has his deficiencies at head coach, but to criticize him for defensive playcalling and say he should've done something which wouldn't have helped is just asinine. And secondly... you'd be hard-pressed to find coaches that play an active hand in the X's and O's in all three phases of the game. I believe it's said that Bill Belichick is one of the few coaches who can coach all levels of an entire team.

If you want to criticize Shanahan, I think a fairer criticism would be to criticize him for his macro-decisions, (should we punt here, or go for it? Should we run/pass more? Should I challenge this? Should I take a timeout here? This player's not playing well, should I bench him? etc. etc.), but I wouldn't be so hard on the defensive playcalling. That's a very challenging offense to deal with, and Kupp/OBJ have a significant advantage over Ambry Thomas, Emmanuel Moseley, and K'Waun Williams.

And obviously improve on the team list above too. Hell, improve on half of them and this team could be dynamic.
