Hard to believe that 49ers guru Bill Walsh had five chances to draft Tom Brady, but passed every single time.

Instead the 49ers drafted Reggie McGrew. Next came Chike Okeafor, After that: Anthony Parker and Pierson Prioleau.

Hands down, that 1999 draft has to be the worst ever. None of those players made a lasting impact.

CAM will never be a SHOE IN Hall of Famer, but Kap was and will never be better than Cam..

This.. the point was not that he was a good QB but if we're measuring how good a QB you will be based on who can throw a football farthest, bench 225 the most, run the fastest, be the tallest and biggest then cam is probably unmatched in those stats.

He was bigger faster stronger than kap and still could not win a Superbowl. This is the same reason Lamar Jackson will never win a Superbowl.

You have to have at least some mental aptitude, preparation, and touch to succeed long term in the NFL. Trying to learn that once you reach the NFL has not seemed to work.

If you cannot read a defense, put a little touch on a pass and progress through your reads it's not going to work long term. You also need to be strong and accurate enough to throw a 10 yard sideline pass and 30 yards in the air and get it close. Being able to move around the pocket for a few steps also helps while keeping your head up.

Jimmy's injury limited his mobility. He also was not forced to throw to the sidelines enough. I think he could have thrown some sideline passed as he had enough arm strength he just was never forced to.

Kaps release took forever, his first couple scrambling steps were slow, his windup also telegraphed where the ball was going.

Smith did not have the arm strength to make the sidelines passes and deep throws.

Grappy regressed here, he just never got the full support.

Kaep - he got too popular too soon, especially after Jaws claimed that he could be the best ever.. u can tell Jaws' brain was never the same after LT's blind side hit.. then to make things worse, Kaep got into entertainment too soon... w/all those magazines and photo shoot...

Smith - felt bad for him because he never had a steady OC to develop his talent.. to make matter worst, he just couldn't re-cock that arm in order to go to his 2nd target..
I agree with some of the takes here that Garoppolo was on a trajectory that was higher than what we've ultimately seen. Recall that after our slow start in KC, Garoppolo was moving he ball very well in a comeback. The idea that Garoppolo could only lead a run first offense was never even conceived at that point.

We weren't a good enough team like we are now, but if we had 2018 pre ACL Jimmy on any of these last teams, we'd have looked better.

I love Bosa to death, but unfortunately he came at a price.

I just hope we do whatever it takes to get Lance to be a franchise QB for this team. We've had it hard enough with Smith, Kap, and Garoppolo.........I don't know that I could take Lance as well, esp. given we paid a big price for him.
I think Jimmy's knee injury really killed his game. He was never a big armed guy so he really needed to drive the ball with his lower body. Also, he needed his mobility which was diminished to move around in the pocket better to plant set his feet. Also, the improv plays basically disappeared from his arsenal.

Kap's story is a bit more…complicated.
cause they suck

Every nfl team passed on Brady multiple times. Even the patriots

Would there have been a Brady or even a Kurt Warner had Bledsoe and Green did not get hurt ?

Great stories sure can start due to a very odd event!!

Yes, but there's a difference. This was BILL FREAKIN' WALSH. The NFL guru. The "genius" of modern football. A master at spotting and developing talent in the late rounds. Again and again and again. Bill Walsh drafted TALENT. He grabbed TALENT off the waiver wire. He developed not one, but TWO QB's that would go on to win the Super Bowl.

The "genius" may have been all of those things. But he was also human. He blew it with Brady. You are correct in that a lot of NFL teams did it as well. Which makes me wonder what the book was on this guy coming out of college.

If I remember correctly, Michigan was still a running team in Brady's years there. Even though he started the last 2 years, he only threw for 2200 and 2400 yards during those years. That's nothing compared to what the big name QBs throw for.. He didn't have a strong combine performance either so he slipped down the charts. He was the 7th QB taken that year.

2.) injuries

Even before Kap got inspired to stand against racism, he was still not focused on football as much as the great ones are. He was off getting stalked by nut jobs while smoking weed with Quinton Patten and some other guy (forgot the other one; a Seahawk WR I think), getting accused of rape because he ghosted the crazy woman he slept with previously. In other words, he was reckless and not solely devoted to his craft long before he decided to use his platform to protest police brutality.
I loved Kap coming out, but I knew we were in trouble when he said, "I'm not big on mechanics."

Also, I used to have some connections to the team around that time, and from what I heard, Kap spent more time partying than trying to get better.

It's interesting how money impacts a youngster like Kaepernick and Trey. And we're talking Millions, so the impact is huge on a player that doesn't have solid work ethics, character and morals. I think that's probably one of the bigger unknows when you draft a player, is how he reacts to having millions of dollars to basically party all day or all year, if he wanted to. Look what happened to Ruggs. I understand that he didn't have any problems in college but in the NFL, he flames out. Sad, for him and for the Raiders.

I thought it was pretty damning when Crabtree said, "Kap needs to hit the books and watch more film (paraphrased)". Crabtree can be a fool, but to specifically mention that aspect, that was bad.
It's better to flame out than fade away.
