I think his speed would be utilized at center as well. He could be a lead blocker on sweep plays at center due to his speed.

Would love it! Him at Center means being fast to the second level all the same and can still open lanes down the field; just maybe more for the inside stuff. I really hope they let West and Poe compete for the gig instead of just giving it to Brendel or Brunskill
West might be a lock now. Good battle between Poe, McKivitz, Skule and Nick Zakelj.

The thought of Poe using that speed to get to the (faster than ever) linebackers of todays game makes me love the idea of having him and West battle it out for the starting center spot, but I do not see a world where Shanny would have a rookie starting at center in his offense. If that did ever happen it wouldn't be by appointing a winner of a camp battle. We would need to give 1 guy all of the 1st team reps to really get acclimated.

That's why I lean towards Mack coming back for one more year bc imo he wouldn't leave us high and dry this late in the season (after FA and the draft)

I'm on this page as well now for the same reasoning. I would assume with a new QB, the team would want Lance taking snaps from his future C now to develop a chemistry. That's why I think Mack is coming back. He's already taken snaps from Mack and getting on the same page with that vet will be an easy transition.

Agree

And I don't think Mack will leave KS hanging in the wind. Too much good history between them.

I concur. I was a little worried when Kyle at his press conference said I know which way Mack is leaning and you probably do too. I also was a bit concerned when Lynch said I'll let Mack make a statement himself on his status. I wish Kyle and Lynch kept their traps shut sometimes

I don't think he left him hanging. KS knew but Mack waited until after June 1 to give cap relief. Classy move by Mack

I agree with this, Mack did us a solid similar to how Staley looked out for us.

I'm "pulling" for Poe! I actually hope he makes the 53 and be (hopefully) the FB/TE/C that Guy Mcintyre used to be. Long shot, I know, but with Mack retiring - anything can happen now.

Great point. 49ers did shell out one of the biggest guaranteed undrafted cash payments to Dohnovan West. I'm pretty sure that was by design due to Mack letting Kyle know of his plans. I don't know if West would have gotten that kind of money if Mack said to Kyle he was returning for one more year. 49ers would have had the option to draft a center in next years draft, instead of developing one before this years season started. Add in the fact that the 49ers added two brand new college coaches fresh from the college ranks vs poaching an assistant OLine coach from one of the NFL teams.
I thought Jake Brendell was going to save the day?!

what a mess
The fact that the Niners have at least 3 options at center is good news. Let them battle for the starting job in camp and pre season. Once they name a starter they'll know what the other guys have as well. Mack was experienced but he was also slower and at the end of his career. They actually may be better with one of these guys.

Just to be clear, I know that Mack was a great center in his day but he's had his day. The 49ers got him on the low side of his career. They'll miss his experience but should gain something in speed and strength.

Possibly, but I have a hard time calling an UDFA a lock, he & O'Neal have the best shots IMO, then Poe & Gemmel at making the 53.

We've had at least two years to find a center and help build some stability along the O-Line.. the 9ers F.O must have known that Mack was gonna retire but choose to Ignore It. We can only hope that "Brendel" Is the answer, for now at least.
