Brian coaching up Trey. Just a shout out to Brian for all of Trey's QB improvements. Hope it continues.

good to see some video action!

Be even better if there was audio.
Trey has the mobility and the athleticism. But having Greise makes him take advantage of preparation like he's a slow, weak arm qb that needs every ounce of preparation and contingency to play in the NFL

Totally agree. add in the needed mechanics, progression reads etc... It helps that Brian's been in the Shanahan system for ages, and is not like Scangarello who's (I don't think) ever actually played as a QB for the Shannahans.

I've really been impressed with Brian coaching up our young QBs so far. Purdy looked like a veteran out there.

He even saved Purdy from drinking someone else's piss

Excuse me what
From what I read in TC reports, Griese had them doing drills that seemed pretty practical.

It's hard to say what Griese brings behind the scenes. We don't know. We can only infer.
But in my opinion, Shanahan is also going to be grilling Trey on the X's and O's, and Trey is also a huge film junkie himself. Mechanics are fine-tuned in the offseason. So Griese's biggest value is to guide Trey with his experience.

I think one of the articles said he actually got his lip cut by that. Here's a video after the game, if you look carefully the left side of his upper lip seems to have a ding! 👀 (I saw it at the 34 second mark)

Yesterday I watched the 49er podcast with Brian Rennick, Al Sacco, and Zain (?). Among other issues, they questioned whether or not Kyle Shanahan is capable of actually teaching a QB how to play the position. They noted from history that Kyle has generally had veteran QBs that did not need a lot of tutoring. Rather than teaching, he would just scheme to their strengths and avoid their weaknesses. That point was acknowledged by all three. Few rookies actually showed gains under his watch. RG3 was more about scheme and the work Sean McVay did with him than with Shanahan.

The reason I bring this up is to shine a light on Brian Griese and the fact he brings a lot more to the table than did previous QB coaches here. With so much on the table with Lance, it would seem that the role Griese plays here should be scrutinized closely. We should be able to measure the value of Griese, and thus the wisdom of the hire, if Lance becomes more consistent, reads better, improves accuracy, etc. under Griese. Of course, the flip side of that would be that we could also see a ceiling for Lance if he fails to improve in those areas, something we all hope does not occur.

Also, now that Garoppolo is actively training with the other QBs, will Griese be able to improve some of his flaws? It has been noted in the JG thread that he is still the same basic QB that he was when he came from New England. That is what I see of him as well. Just drawing a paycheck for 8 years does not concretely put a lid on a player. Shanahan replacing Scangarello would seem to speak to recognition of the need for better QB coaching.

With so much at stake with the rest of the roster, Brian Griese appears to be the key guy in the building at this point. Will Lance be able to respond to Griese to bring his level of play to a higher and more consistent level?

Time will tell.

I think Kyle replaced Scangarello because Scang's idea of a good QB prospect does not match what Lance is. Summarized points from the bottom of the article pasted below. Greise's playing experience should be beneficial for Lance. The unknown here is what is Greise as a teacher? He has zero experience in this role, or any coaching role for that matter.

Let's summarize what Scangerallo said he values:
1. A quarterback who faced heavy pressure in the pocket during college and wasn't a Pro Day wonder (i.e. not Lance. North Dakota State had terrific pass protection, and he had a phenomenal Pro Day).
2. A quarterback who elevated his program (i.e. not Lance. North Dakota State is the best program in the FCS. They compete for championships every year no matter who their quarterback is).
3. A quarterback who was a multi-year starter (i.e. not Lance. He started at North Dakota State in 2019, then played just one game in 2020 due to the pandemic, then he declared for the draft).
4. A quarterback who thrived in two-minute situations in college (i.e. not Lance. He famously had zero two-minute situations at North Dakota State).
5. A quarterback such as Mac Jones or Kenny Pickett (i.e. Not Lance).
It seems clear that when Scangarello talked about highly-drafted quarterbacks who fail, he was describing Lance. And if Scangarello truly believes Lance will be a bust, then the 49ers needed to get rid of Scangarello and replace him with someone who thinks Lance can be great.

That's a pretty reasonable list. He sounds like he wanted Watson in 2017.
