No matter how good you are at a job, if you don't do it for 10 years you forget the details.

Dick Vermeil won a SB after spending like 16 years away from coaching. You don't suddenly forget what you've learned about the game, especially if you're continually surrounded by it because you're calling games which involves watching tape weekly and conducting interviews with players and coaches.

Dick Vermeil took the Eagles to a Superbowl little different situation then with Griese who has no experience coaching.

Yea that analogy makes no sense. Where did the idea he took a 16 year break from coaching come from?

[Note ok between eagles and rams. I was looking backwards from eagles. Anyway jc is right because he had. Almost 20 years continuous experience before then]

I think Griese is going to help Trey more with the mental aspect of the game, in addition to game planning. He's basically an older backup qb who played in this offense for years (from a mental standpoint)

Jordan Palmer worked with Allen, and Trey is working with him in LA during the offseason. He'll probably work with John Beck too.
I think he'll be fine.

He has been immersed in the NFL for some time and has had to do a lot of homework to call games on TV.

Also - I think KS/JL are a couple of smart guys.
I have no issues with the hire. I hope he is a home run as I hope Lance is lol
It might be good. Somebody has to teach the kid how the read the field, better mechanics, how to throw. We need a guy to fix up Lance. He needs a lot of work and has a long way to go.

That's certainly the right attitude.

Vemail was also a HC. No one is asking Griese to do anything but coach the position that he played for a decade in the NFL. He doesn't have to manage a whole roster or even a whole offense, he just has to run a QB room.

The question was this:

Vermeil is one such example.

Yup, and we all know Kyle is the OC with support around him. Griese is there to focus on the little things and mechanics SanDiego refers to imo. Also game situations, mental makeup etc etc. It think it has a great chance to work well.

To everyone evaluating our coaching hires... whether you have a good/bad opinion... to be honest, unless it's an established NFL coach that has a track record... how much can we really evaluate new, young hires?

There's really not a lot to go off of, except to just see what their lineage is.

+1

like jc said it doesnt make sense since before he gave up the eagles gig, he had about 22 years of continuous coaching experience.

Griese has had zero.

so there is precedent for tv work going to coaching....with a 20 year (highly successful) history of coaching behind that.

The 49ers drafted a QB, not a RB. If Lance is going to be out there running like Lamar Jackson, his career won't be a long lasting one.

The stuff he needs to master comes down to being able to sit in the pocket and pick a defense apart with his arm.

Like Elway and Young, his ability to run is just the cherry on top, not the entire meal.

Scramble drills don't come *naturally*. Point being he has the coaching to for those RB abilities. Brian will focus on the QB skills.
We really talking about his experience? How about winning a national championship and winning a Super Bowl and having spent like 20+ years actually playing the position. At the highest level dude was an NFL QB with 83 starts went toe to toe with John Lynch as a player, Ray Lewis, you name it. He's coaching QBs here something he's spent his life doing his credentials check out. This is a home run hire.

Griese had a decade of playing experience. Considering that most NFL QB coaches never played the position in the pros and had very few years of coaching under their belts when they attained that position, Griese is better qualified to work with a young QB than most.
