I'm just not a fan of constant coaching changes. Unless the players are complaining then it may not be about coaching. The one thing that stands out with the teams that are bad every year is chaos. Constant change with the coaching staff. The players never get comfortable.
Schneider is in his third year as the ST Coordinator so there has been enough time for Shanahan to assess whether he want to retain him for 2025. There will not be a mid-season firing but I'm sure Schneider is on the hot seat at season's end.

Fair enough. Changing in mid season is never a good idea. Systems and attitudes should be instilled during training camp. Continuity was a hallmark of the Niners in their heyday. Seifert was the DC for years until Walsh stepped down. Dwayne Board was the D line coach for 8 years. Bobb Mckittrick coached the O line the entire time. The team always looked organized and well prepared. Nobody looked confused.
Probably won't be a mid-season fire.

But if he's retained next year, something is very wrong with KS/JL.

What if they retain him and add a couple good special teams players. My problem with replacing him isn't that he's great. As always who are you going to get? Who's a great special teams guy that would want to leave his current job?

Hiring an established guy is not a requirement. Look at the staffs of the top five ST units and hire one of the key assistants. Find the DeMeco Ryans of ST coordinators out there.

Sometimes a new voice/new methods can have players improve. "Who else can we get?" I mean if roll the dice on damn near anyone at this point. Our ST isn't mediocre, it's horrendous

Shanahan has blinkers on for this phase.
Possibly changing the coach next season means they either think things will get better or hope that special teams is not an important factor in the winning of a Super Bowl.
I don't see either.

This seems like a sensible approach. When Brian Schneider was hired, I thought he'd be better than Richard Hightower,
who is currently with the Bears (currently ranked 24th by Rick Gosselin). Under Brian Schneider, the 49ers are worse,
and currently ranked 31st

The Top 5 ST Units this season:

  • Houston Texans
  • New Orleans Saints
  • New York Jets
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Los Angeles Chargers

I'd even consider putting together a staff of ex-special teams studs, who are interested in coaching at this point.

I still think changing some players might help but Schneider can't just do that on his own. Kyle would need to approve moving a player. There are some teams that use starters on special teams. Not many but a few. The Niners had Navarro Bowman on special teams for a while. The new kickoff rules were meant to cut down on injuries since players aren't flying down the field with a big head start.

When a particular side of the game has been bad for going on two seasons now, something needs to change. I dont even care if its scapegoating, but Schneider needs to lose his job. Its been far too long for us to be inept for him to keep his job.

I agree. You can't just ignore it like they have been doing

Gotta find a specialist or two that can cover kicks. This is costing us games.

If you're going to keep quoting the past you need to also realize that our Current ST blunders wouldn't fly with Walsh or Siefret. Schneider would have been fired if this crap happened during the Walsh era.

Schneider is responsible for Moody's misses, Cowing's muffs and Luters inability to avoid Cowing. It's his responsibility to make sure that they play well and play smart.

They have had way too many bad boneheaded mistakes to warrant Schneider getting fired.

Well, when the ST coach isn't held accountable and the unit is still making mistakes, it becomes the Head Coach's responsibility.

Firing the special teams coordinator after a couple years of an unacceptable level of play and what you are describing aren't even in the same universe.
