I still think changing some players might help but Schneider can't just do that on his own. Kyle would need to approve moving a player. There are some teams that use starters on special teams. Not many but a few. The Niners had Navarro Bowman on special teams for a while. The new kickoff rules were meant to cut down on injuries since players aren't flying down the field with a big head start.
If you're going to keep quoting the past you need to also realize that our Current ST blunders wouldn't fly with Walsh or Siefret. Schneider would have been fired if this crap happened during the Walsh era.
Schneider is responsible for Moody's misses, Cowing's muffs and Luters inability to avoid Cowing. It's his responsibility to make sure that they play well and play smart.
They have had way too many bad boneheaded mistakes to warrant Schneider getting fired.
They also used better players on special teams because they weren't so worried about injuries to a guy getting paid a lot of money. The game has changed a lot since then so it probably isn't a good idea to compare the eras.

I disagree. I'm not trying to defend Schneider as i think he fired at the end of the year but blaming a coach on misses is dumb. Maybe if he's misses wide or has crappy technique but thats not the case here. Moody just missed them. These are professional players, coaching can only take you so far.
If Shanahan decides to move off Schneider, the Saints' interim head coach might be someone they go after. I think the Saints have had above-average special teams with Rizzi as the coordinator and if they clean house at the end of the season he will be available.
The #49ers rank dead last in EPA/Play for both kickoff and punt coverage - and it's not even close. Through 10 weeks, #SF has lost a staggering 11 expected points on kickoffs and 22 on punts. pic.twitter.com/Js6XDu45q2

I recall during the Harbaugh era that he always allowed the ST coach to decide on 1-2 spots on the final cut for the 53. Kyle should adopt this approach. I hear him blaming ST performance on injuries (Pratice Squad guys bring thrown into the fire). But this would restore some stability in this s**t unit.
I heard Maiocco talking abut special teams issues. He mentioned that some players that are good on special teams have been thrown into starting rolls. One or two key players could make a difference.
The ST unit s**t the bed in this game as well, in more subtle ways. The worst of which was the punt into the end zone on the last drive. Seattle didn't even have a return man back. How hard is it to punt it inside the 20 in that scenario?
