He's being used as a lockdown CB shadowing the WR1. Baller. How was he an UDFA?

I think he would only be shadowing the WR1 when that WR1 is big and physical (Metcalf and AJ Brown).
Leads the league in passes defended !

he is also the only corner that I've ever seen on our team in the last 25+ years that consistently breaks up slot fades

Man, I'm so happy to see this free agent acquisition paying off.
IIRC, we signed him the year after our off-the-street CB's were getting called for DPI every single play, and I think it was the offseason after Cooper Kupp and OBJ abused us in the NFCCG? I remember we signed him to a modest 3 year, $40M contract. (Modest compared to the other contracts signed that offseason).

I remember looking at the film and thinking "Oh wow, I like that this guy actually has the ball skills to contest passes."
So far, he's done exactly that. He doesn't win every battle, and maybe he'll give up a pass here or there. But the dude CHALLENGES opposing receivers. That's all we really need from our cornerbacks with our pass rush.

I'm really hopeful we can extend him.

He's an absolute stud and the closest thing to a lock down corner I can remember us having since the 90's. Definitely the best FA signing on the defense in the Lynch era.
One thing I'll say is that Ward does well in games where he goes against a big physical WR or where the refs let them play or both. The ticky tacky refs and quicker WRs can give him problems and his grabby style will be penalized.
Ward just talked about how he has a 1 years old with Down syndrome. That recently she's started being happy when she sees him and plays with him. He said that started happening right around the time that he started playing really good.

props to him for embracing his daughter and the unfortunate issue she has. He sounds like a great father.

i hope she keeps loving on him cause I love the product on the field that he credits it to. Lol

That's sad, but glad for Mooney, he's playing lights out, needs a new deal, I know Lynch will get it done this offseason, need to keep him, also love his character & how we have a culture that perfectly fits Ward.

I'm 100% confident Ward gets a new deal next offseason, same with Dre, & Armstead.

Yeah, I'd love to see us resign him, dre, and armstead. All studs and all critical to our culture. Ward has always been good for us but he's been lights out - the amount of PBU since the bye is staggering.

i love that our DBs are playing great ball on their own and not just by products of a dominant pass rush. This defense can do special things if the front seven and back end continue to play such amazing defense simultaneously.

Although its our own guys, I think if they extended BA, Greenlaw, Armstead, Ward, AND Young in the same offseason, that's worth a press conference for those guys lol.
What's his injury situation?

Can't be a great initial prognosis right now. In KNBR, post game, aiyuk said he's praying for him. And the team immediately signed Jason freaking Verrett to practice squad and hour after the game concluded. I'm worried

I bet he's out two weeks. Of course I'm just guessing but when he was trying to move on the sideline with it in front of the trainers, it looked like he at least could perform the drill with pain. But I think he'll just need to rest.
