Niners sign CB Charvarius "Mooney" Ward

Ward was a "name" in Kansas City. His "name" was always mentioned as a player they needed to keep. This is absolutely an upgrade for our secondary. Good signing.
I absolutely love this signing. I'm not sure what's to hate about it:

Prototypical size
Still young
LOVES to tackle
Great locker room guy
Sticky in coverage
Scheme variant

I wasn't even looking at him as a target bc I figured Chiefs would resign him. But reading some of the messages from Chiefs fan, it seems like that FO doesn't spend big money on corners. Their highest paid corner under their current GM made 3.5 mil

He's a very solid corner. Lol at the Mosely comparison by NC, he's much better than him. And like you said, still young. I think we got a hell of a steal here.

Sweet. Now we have 3 average outside CB's who fold in big games and no slot CB.

he's not avg actually but keep on keeping on.

He's Emmanuel Moseley's twin. Really solid player. Solid.

No... Moseley is Walmart version of Ward. This is coming from someone who has watched almost every game of both guys career.

He got beat up against Chase but Chase beats everyone including Ramsey.

K.

By PFF ratings, other than as a pass rusher off the edge, Ward is a virtual copy of Emanuel Moseley. Ward is a little bigger 6'1", 198. E-Man 5'11" 185
_________Ranking Def.----- RDef----PRush----Cov
Ward. ---- #21 ------71 -----69 -------PRush ----68

E-Man ----#30 -------69 ------69 ------ 55 -------68

Ward is definitely an upgrade of Norman and Johnson whether he will be worth the money is yet to be seen.

Lol @ this post:

"Had to ****ing save our nickels and dimes for Frank goddamn ****ing pile of s**t Clark.

Love seeing a homegrown, ascending defensive back leave so we can retain a ****ing uzi-wielding fraudulent ass-clown who's done nothing but steal money from this franchise for 3 years all in a face-saving move so we can pretend like pissing away a first rounder for this piece of s**t instead of just signing Za'Darius Smith wasn't obviously the move to have made."

Chiefs fans are far and away the most "colorful" of all. I still remember fans wanting to wrap Alex Smith up in an AIDS blanket. 🤣

Yup, still need a top slot CB. That cost us big time in the NFCCG.

PS: There's nothing wrong with this signing overall. Definitely overpaid IMHO but I'll never fault a FO for trying to improve a weakness. But this better not be it.

They badly need a slot CB, an entire OL minutes LT, backup QB (not cheap), etc.

This is the issue, when you don't watch other teams, you see well JC Jackson & Carlton Davis & Stephon Gilmore as name players, then you have a Charvarius Ward, people are like "WHO", well, watch some KC games, yeah he got beat by Chase, but like someone said, so did Ramsey, there is no true shutdown CB, they all get burned or beaten, this is a great pickup, everyone every year does this, this guy sucks, overpay, over drafted, then it ends up good.

We took a punter instead of having one.

I would love DJ Reed.
These threads are always funny whether in FA or draft when 49ers bring in someone who isn't a huge name as a FA/prospect.

Initial reactions are always "overpaid/bust/awful move" or along those lines. Then people with logic or actual information come in and suddenly the thread turns to excitement.

I've been through too many seasons where we bring in the big name guys who play ok, bust completely or simply don't help us win, while the low key signings or the less popular ones end up being the best ones.

I'm just going to see how Ward does here and then make my judgement. I think this regime has earned the wait and see factor from fans but that's just me. Glad to see KC fans bummed to see him go. I think with our pass rush we can get guys in the backend to play better and Ward is legit and plays well vs the run as well. Chase burned the best corner in the game as well. It happens.

My biggest concern going into this FA was keeping our own guys and unfortunately 2 of my top 2 must keeps are moving on in Laken and DJ. I hope we get some of our other guys back and moving Jimmy is key in that. Hope today is the day. I'm sure Watson is holding things up.
