Yup, still need a top slot CB. That cost us big time in the NFCCG.

I would love DJ Reed.

That was my #1 target because he can play outside, inside and is a kick returner. He's also the #2 rated CB behind only J.C. Jackson and already knows our scheme.

If I'm DJ Reed as soon as we suggest putting him at nickel again I'm hanging up.

These threads are always funny whether in FA or draft when 49ers bring in someone who isn't a huge name as a FA/prospect.

Initial reactions are always "overpaid/bust/awful move" or along those lines. Then people with logic or actual information come in and suddenly the thread turns to excitement.

I've been through too many seasons where we bring in the big name guys who play ok, bust completely or simply don't help us win, while the low key signings or the less popular ones end up being the best ones.

I'm just going to see how Ward does here and then make my judgement. I think this regime has earned the wait and see factor from fans but that's just me. Glad to see KC fans bummed to see him go. I think with our pass rush we can get guys in the backend to play better and Ward is legit and plays well vs the run as well. Chase burned the best corner in the game as well. It happens.

My biggest concern going into this FA was keeping our own guys and unfortunately 2 of my top 2 must keeps are moving on in Laken and DJ. I hope we get some of our other guys back and moving Jimmy is key in that. Hope today is the day. I'm sure Watson is holding things up.

True. We need to see how he does in THIS scheme now. He could end up excellent. But yeah, as of this moment, we're down two great scheme fit players and possibly added one.

Best thing is that he's still very young with tons of upside. Hopefully it works out.

I wasn't even looking at him as a target bc I figured Chiefs would resign him. But reading some of the messages from Chiefs fan, it seems like that FO doesn't spend big money on corners. Their highest paid corner under their current GM made 3.5 mil

He's a very solid corner. Lol at the Mosely comparison by NC, he's much better than him. And like you said, still young. I think we got a hell of a steal here.

🤣

Ward was picked on more in 2021 than in any other season of his career — he was targeted on 17.9% of his coverage snaps, the 14th-highest rate among NFL corners," wrote Anthony Treash of PFF. "Despite that, Ward held his own and recorded a career-high PFF grade (71.2). He generated 0.37 PFF WAR, which ranked 16th among NFL corners

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Ward allowed the lowest average separation on targets (2 yards) and second-lowest completion % among DBs (45%), among DBs with min. 50 targets in '21," ESPN's Nick Wagoner tweeted

I know you hate this FO/Kyle but this was a great signing.
I like this move.

I'm serious. This obsession with putting him at nickel is ignoring how good he was playing on the perimeter last year. This team put him at Safety and then when that failed put him at Nickel rather than letting him play outside where he was really f**king good in college. So yeah I'm all for bringing in DJ Reed to play outside and bringing back Williams at nickel.

Damn some strong reactions lol this is something you like to see when your team pays someone big.
Is it a lock 🔐 that he's going to beat out Moseley and Ambry for that #1 CB job? I wouldn't say it is. I think thats the issue. Still, its better than Norman I guess and he won't be a liability.

Im also assuming they're gonna try and bring back Verrett on the cheap, but I've already written him off.

It's definitely a lock that he's CB #1

Thank you for this…their fans loved them some Ward and thought "$14M" was a bargain. Even that number is inflated currently…I bet it's less then that all said and done

Nah, the signing is solid. But let's not act like he's much better than Emmanuel Moseley during many similar stretches. He was at the bottom of my short target list as well. He just doesn't solve much or upgrade a whole unit much for $14M. Just keep building but this FO is known for one big "splash" and this might be it.
