Charvarius Ward
After a very impressive 2019 campaign, Charvarius Ward was primed to compete for one of the outside corner spots in 2020. Unfortunately, Ward seemed to take a major step back in 2020 as he struggled with penalties and gave up a lot of big plays and was even a liability in certain matchups. Ward did have the hand injury in week 1 of the 2020 season which may have bothered him a bit and I don't want to downplay a player's injury because none of us truly know, but are we using the broken hand as an excuse for continuously getting beat deep and committing countless penalties? Sure, Ward still had his fair share of good stretches in 2020 but the idea of him being a No. 1 or No. 2 corner for K.C. seems like a stretch. At this point he seems more like a 3rd or a 4th corner. It's also important to remember Ward was a UDFA after all and may have already hit his ceiling That's not necessarily a bad thing either. A UDFA turned solid rotational corner will always be considered a win. I'd be scared of relying on Ward once again 2021, though.

how did he do last year ?

Really solid year. 900+ snaps and 65.7 PFF grade overall (Moseley 68.7). Failed in the big games.

Not only the injury, but it being a covid year as well.

He had a good rookie year as well, and showed last year he belongs.

At 25 there is room to grow. 3 years 26 mil guaranteed if a solid contract for us, and it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work out. I rather have this contract than the 3 years 42 mil JC got, and knowing how many Patriot CBs bust after leaving there, I feel more at ease with this signing.
If he's the best corner on our team now (probably is) then it's a good signing.

I'm not counting out Ambry.

Tough call. J.C. Jackson generates turnovers...our biggest weakness on the back end. That said, that's still very pricey.

Eek. Moseley is not very good inside. Really struggles with quickness and laterally IMHO.

The game is changing some though, teams are using bigger slot guys now. Mosely would've done a better job on Kupp than Kwuan. While I agree he might struggle some with the quicker shiftier slot WRs.

And don't sleep on Lem, he showed that's hes definitely got the athleticism to play the slot, he was just raw.
I'd put him and Thomas on the outside. Certain nickel situations I'd slide Ward in the slot and bring in Moseley on the outside. But if we got a stud killing us on the outside we need to leave Ward out there, and have another guy who can handle the slot. Granted that we don't bring back Williams
So I'm not going to pretend I know anything about this guy (other than I saw his name brought up as a possibility yesterday morning)

But all of his numbers seem good… 1st in completion percentage allowed, 3rd in passer rating allowed, etc. Why was he so low on NFL.com's top 100 free agents list? Is their list basically just ranked on splash/household name value and nothing else?
I always have this scene from Moneyball pop in my head when people assume any CB can just move to the slot

I can't see that. Moseley would've got roasted as well. He's not built for the slot. Neither is Lem in my opinion. Hope I'm wrong on Lem though. We need somebody to work out for us.

Eman is a bit bigger and can play more physical than Kwuan. Probably Kupp still torches us since he's that damn good, but it would make sense why Eman would've been better in that matchup.
I see we still shopping at the swap meet for DB's. As a former DB you would think Lynch held the position in higher regard...........
I have no problem with the signing. He seems to be a scheme fit, not one of the names I was hoping for, but a fit for the defense. My only worry is how this effects our ability to extend Deebo, Bosa, and Jimmie Ward. I mean, I'm not a "cap-ologist", so I'm worried this could hurt our ability to extend higher priorities. Plus, we still haven't offloaded Jimmy G. What if we end up having to swallow his salary for 2022 by keeping him on the roster?
He is an upgrade and starter. Its a good start. If any of the rookies progress more we will be fine outside. I am wondering about the slot.

True. I'm more focused on the NFCW. But perhaps with more focus on the slot Moseley will get better too but to me, it's one of those positions where you want a specialist and 100% focus because it's such a different skill set and focus from outside.
