These are football players, not bodybuilders. Adding mass isn't the end all, be all for them. Their training style is geared towards more functional lifting meant to build power and explosiveness. Jackson's job is to take down QBs and he's plenty big for a DE in this scheme.

That a guy who was already 254 managed to get to 267 without getting sloppy is wild. That's an impressive gain, no matter who you are. I don't think you realize how ridiculous that weight is for a guy that is 6'3". That is nearly 20 pounds more than Von Miller's reported playing weight at the same height.

If anything I expect him to drop down closer to 260 as the season approaches and his football training gears up. I'm far more concerned with his conditioning and developing his skill as a pass rusher to be a more effective player this season.

Agree with everything but this. Technically his job is to beat the OL in front of him. He doesn't need to build strength to take down a QB or RB, he needs to disrupt the play whether by pressuring, sacking or even rushing the throw. Setting the edge, chasing down RBs or just deflecting passes. Tons of responsibilities, but most start with beating the tackle, which is why it's silly to want him to bulk up too much. One of his best traits according to teammates is the freakish bend he has to get around tackles.

I am very very shocked he just Now hit three plates on each side of the bench press. I was able to do that when I was 20 years old weighing 175 pounds so this guy does not impress me with his strength in the very least. This guy should be hitting 4 plates. He does need upper body strength to hold up against the run and get around some of these tackles.

Sure there's a lot of elguapos in the gym that focus on that one thing. Bench press. There's a lot of normal dudes who can bench a lot in this world. They are not world class athletes that focus on every other area of their game. And how many times did drake put up 315? Was it once or 20 times? I honestly don't know. I do know he showed some great flashes last season

I know plenty of fat f**ks who can bench a lot but can't do a proper pull up or squat at all. Forget about the conditioning.

I recall Maiocco saying that Jackson's lack of conditioning last season became more and more obvious as the season progressed. As you said, and as we see looking around the league, some of the very best Edge players are not massively strong guys, they are good technicians first of all.

Yeah, being strong but slow/tired is horrible. Lol you need to be refined with your technique and conditioning. I honestly don't know why this guy just isn't doing what bosa does? Or similar to it. Lol that's what I'd be doing. Jackson has all the natural talent to be a really good player but we will find out if he has the proper work ethic this season. He really is the biggest question mark on our D and currently the biggest weakness. Mainly because he's such a big question mark right now.

A few HOF pass rushers ... so obviously it's not about weight, they were all very strong, fast, quick and sneaky smart
Charles Haley ~240-250 lbs max
Fred Dean was ~235 lbs
Derrick Thomas ~240 lbs
Lawrence Taylor ~240 lbs
Von Miller ~240-245 lbs

Alot of 3-4 ( line backers) guys there ....not trench guys

In the case of Haley and LT they also had some freedom to call their own gap rushes attempts.

I also don't think listing a series of guys with a freakish first step is a trait you can assign to most 250 pound dudes position be damned.

Some of the HOF guys listed Haley, Dean, LT played during a different era when the OL average weights were in the 260lb range. Players seem to have gotten bigger on average on that side of the line more than the defensive side. There's always the outlier NT. DEs or LBs playing an end can utilize speed and technique, or a relentless motor to get the QB.

DDon't forget Fred Dean was the only true lineman in that group. Ungodly strong. Possibly the most impressive player pound for pound in the bunch. What was his great quote? "Whenever I get the urge to lift weights I lie down till it goes away" classic Bill Walsh acquisition

Jed York has the final say in every player acquisition especially when it involves high profile players. If the article is true about how challenging it was for Lynch and Shanahan to sell the bidding for Javon Hargrave, then I don't think they'll be going for either Hunter or Young. In my opinion, team is expecting Drake Jackson to be a great contributor this year.

That's actually a good point. A lot of "strength" in football is will power

I recall that very well when we got him. I didn't know much about him but he press he got made me pay attention.

As soon as he took the field he was a FORCE!

An absolute difference maker.

LLooking back you can see how his combination of strength motor and Agility provided the blueprint for the undersized athletic Edge rushers of the 80s. Some of these highlights it surprising to see such a slender hip guy bull through offensive lineman on one play, then lay out to bring down a running back in space. A deceptively strong tenacious and quick reacting lineman who is deservedly in the Hall of Fame.

It didn't sound like it was a hard sell at all.
