Agree about the measurables. I think Sid and Al Davis (when Sid was developing his forward pass philosophy) no kidding - they took some garbage cans and lined them up on the football field - and began measuring the Defensive coverages and calculated the areas covered by the defenders vs the areas not covered by the defenders, the probabilities of interceptions vs completions and the like, and came up with the Air Coryell kind of passing concepts that now are employed by many systems.
Basically, the idea was that a football field is about 50 yards wide and 100 yards long (40 of those yards is usable by the QB to throw passes depth wise - generally speaking). That's a ton of space to be covered by defenders and the idea of Sid's was to just use math and see how much more space wide open there is, vs what the individual 11 defenders can cover.
Even in Sid's offense, you didn't really need a rocket arm to work it. But he did want a QB that can be accurate and throw on time. I agree with Alex Smith, Purdy is an ideal QB for this system.
That's pretty cool, did you learn that first paragraph from a book or is it just something you remember hearing about back then?
but yeah, I think Brock has the perfect skill set/mind set to operate this offense at a high level and alongside Kyle. I've said it many times on here, but I believe a coach & QB need to be very aligned on how they see the game, in order to get the most out of the offense. Need both to be essentially one common mind/unit - especially since Kyle is the play caller too. I think we've found that.
It's early and Brock still needs to prove that but I think he's done about as good of a job as you possibly can up to this point, I anticipate he will keep it up.
for the first time in a long time, I feel like our offense is the strongest unit and I'm least concerned about. The defense worries me a little bit, not much, because of the adjustment to the blitz packages. Then special teams keeps me up at night right now. Lol it's going to cost us some games this year if they don't get their behinds in gear shortly.
Al Davis gave an interview along with Walsh way back in the day and they kind of told their favorite stories about football in general. That interview always stuck in my mind for some reason.
I love how Kyle's designed this offense for Brock. It's going to be tough getting to Brock with the multiple TE's he's got on the roster now. If Philly is going to pass rush Brock, Kyle will just run CMC and Mason down Riddik's throat, and turn Riddick into road graded asphalt.
That's pretty cool. I enjoy watching interviews on people I admire from back in the day too. It's insightful and just fun to see how different the world used to be.
im very curious to see what differences Kyle adds to the offense from last year. Kyle has tailored it to Brock's skill set this year, which is super exciting. Makes me think the offense will be more efficient than last year, which it was really good last year with Brock.
Does Philly have the same amount of pass rushers from last year? Obviously minus hargrave? I know they drafted that DT from Georgia - which seems like he will be a monster if he doesn't get lazy. A lot of their guys last year were older too, so With another year under their belt - hopefully they slow down some. I hope it's more of a quick pass scheme when we play Philly - unless our o line starts to show that it can be better than last year.
I don't know too much about the Eagles other than what I read here and some casual research. They are attempting to do a Kinlaw/Buckner swap with Jalen/Hargrave, and it looks like the lost some good free agents. Yes, Fletcher Cox is a year older - 35 and he could fall off a cliff - performance wise at that age. I hope so when we play them.
They are a good team but they fell back to earth after they won the super bowl under Pederson. They might do the same this year - and fall to 9-7 again this year.
The Two Tight End set is what I really wanted Kyle to put in, to protect Brock, and it's a good sign that Kyle's going to retain (what looks like) four tight ends and still have another TE/FB in Juszczyk. CMC is going to be a big factor in this offense this season, even bigger than last year. Just look at the '94 offense and how much of it was centered around Ricky Watters.
I think this is going to be a much more run oriented ballclub in my opinion - and I think the Chargers game was an indication of that. A lot of runs up the middle in that Charger game. I think the run game does two things (1) controls the clock (2) protects Purdy, because our OLine is suspect. Kyle and Purdy will still pass the ball, don't get me wrong, but I think Kyle is going to consciously really try to make sure no ballclub is going to just tee off on Brock. They will have to account for CMC/Mason/TDP and Mitchell (if he's healthy) if clubs are going to try to stop the 49er passing attack. I think it's going to be even more of a ball hog offense as Kyle is designing his defense to use the blitz to aggressively generate turnovers (like last year) but this time they have Hargrave freeing up Bosa to kill the QB and cause even more turnovers.
At least that's how I'm reading the moves Kyle's making right now. No surprise that Kyle bolstered the special teams, because he might just want to play a field position game come playoff time to protect Purdy and not repeat what happened in the Eagles game last year.
