announcers are openly laughing at Steve for often not getting it over 50 ("his thing is accuracy") and he also gets a penalty when he really tries to put all he has into it on the second try

side note: Jim Harbaugh is giddy as hell saying "that's great for me"

Steve never had a cannon arm. I disagree with the whole "flick it with ease". He was accurate downfield too though, which gave an illusion that he had a crazy arm...but he never had...

Of course, pure arm strength means almost nothing in the NFL, but nonetheless I want the narratives to be accurate and in context what people at the time thought.

Steve was a wrist thrower. Lot's of people use him as an example of snap and lift.

Steve had a good arm, in an era of insane arms. Steve was not top 5 in his era for arm strength. Just off the top of my mind, Moon, Elway, George, Cunningham, Farve, Kelly and Marino come to mind. They all clearly had bigger arms. With all those, you could argue Troy Aikman.

If someone put a gun to my head I would say Young was top 10ish in arm strength in his era.....no one....is going to argue Purdy is top 10 in this era.

Young had a stronger arm then Purdy has now.....but I would put Purdy over Montana, and as a QB I got laughed out of a thread recently for saying I would take Young over Montana.....most would view Montana over Young...as well as all the QBs listed here with only Marino being a real argument.

Purdy has enough arm, and all his other stuff seems great. Love the dude.

Yeah, my memory of Steve Young's arm is more accuracy than rocket arm. I'd say - just from gut feeling - Steve was a B+ arm if A+ is the top. Bret got something like 67 in that video, and if he was A+, Steve was B+ in my recollection.

lol, Steve Young with the canon. Dude, he was my favorite player growing up, but his arm was pretty average. As is Brock's. The point is whether you can make all the throws on the field and both Young and Brock can. Furthermore, Brock is plenty athletic and has a pocket mobility that was borderline elite at times (see the dropped TD to Ayiuk in playoffs). Young could scramble, for sure, but let's not act like Brock is just some pedestrian with a noodle arm back there who only throws dump offs.

Your hard on for Darnold's arm is boring and renders any rational discussion meaningless since you have a proclivity to putting down the guy who has earned the spot ahead of him on the depth chart. So much goes into what makes a great QB. I hope Darnold has that stuff, but I'd much rather Purdy just continue doing what he's did last year and be a top five QB on a rookie salary then next few years.

What are you talking about? Steve Young had a MUCH stronger arm than Brock Purdy. He could make throws all over the field. He could hit Rice and Owens outside the numbers and deep. He could throw balls with velocity.

Brock had a total of 10 yards rushing last year and you want to compare him to one of the greatest QB rushers in NFL history? I have no words.

I wasn't the one who brought up Young, just pointing out that Brock is no slouch in the athletic department since the comparison of their bodies was made.

I wonder if you even watched him play last year? You claim Brock can't make all the throws, but if you watched him play, he in fact made every throw a QB needs to make. He showed incredible elusiveness and pocket presence. You have the audacity to claim 95% of Brock's passes were dump offs and screens, but that flies in the face of observable reality. Which leads me to believe you have an agenda or just don't have a good memory.

The tape doesn't lie.

Agree, and he looked Purdy good in the Charger's game. Smooth, and efficient. Kyle's passing game can dominate the league this season with Purdy's passing. Just give Purdy a good offensive line that can give him 3+ seconds in the pocket and he can do the rest to extend plays.

That video never gets old, to me. What a miracle rookie season for Brock. I think something special is in store for him this season.

Once he makes a fortune off the field, maybe he will take a haircut salary cap wise so we can keep building a monster! If he does that, skys the limit on how long we can compete for it all! Would be an awesome window.

LOL, did you watch the video? Steve Young threw it 60 yards.

Knowing Kyle being an offensive genius, I don't think Prudy taking a salary haircut is really needed on his team. Kyle's been great at finding the Breidas, Mitchells, Jauan's. and Brendel's. I don't think Purdy's salary will be a detriment to any future Superbowl's because of the kind of coach we have. Having said that, I do hope Purdy doesn't want a salary so high that he has to hold out for it like Bosa. We'll see.

Purdy's pretty articulate, Mature, poised. I think he has a future as a Steve Young type of talking head. I don't know what kind of products he'll hawk, but hopefully it's something more exciting that what Joe did with shavers (if I remember correctly). Maybe he'll do something down to earth like a Home Depo commercial, or something like that. I don't think hawking Insurance would be Purdy's style, but who knows.

and that was starting to resemble a punt.....

I think the point being made is he was not one of the stronger arms in that era.
People are talking about a salary haircut for Brock? Let him finish a season first before you project his next contract, Jesus.

Anyway, the dude is awesome and I think his arm is good enough. Reminds me a lot of Drew Brees in terms of stature and arm strength. Brees never had a howitzer for an arm but managed to deliver the ball on time and accurately. Look at some of his highlights you'll even see some underthrown deep passes that were caught because he got the ball out early enough to let his receivers make a play on it.

It "resembled a punt" which means by the law of physics, if he had taken off less angle on the ball, it would have gone further to maybe 70 yards.
