Griese wasn't sure how Purdy would react. After all, he'd started a single NFL game and was facing a blizzard of challenges as the team prepared for Seattle. He hadn't practiced and knew he wouldn't be 100 percent physically. He'd be playing on an artificial surface, on national television and in a rowdy stadium that had been a decade-long nightmare for the 49ers. On top of that, Purdy felt a heavy responsibility to veterans like Williams, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey to continue the momentum the team had built in the second half of the season.

It was a daunting mix that would mentally test even a 10-year starter. Purdy was a seventh-round pick who was 12 days away from his 23rd birthday. How would he deal with that mountain of doubt?

"For somebody — anybody — to be able to handle that situation, to be able to mentally put aside how you feel and to be able to focus amidst all of those swirling issues and doubts and fears — that's just not normal," Griese said.

People like nick wright said s**t like purdy had no pressure, which i find hilarious

last year was basically his one and only shot to make a name for himself and he did it spectacularly. He has a ton of pressure , actually
Prove all the naysayers wrong, Brock.
"To go out and perform the way that he did under all those stressors and all the unknowns — that was really eye-opening to me," Griese said. "I think the rest of the offense — and really the entire roster — kind of resonated around him that night, and it certainly helped him as the rest of the season went on, too. Because now the guys in the locker room know exactly what they're getting in him."

Shanahan said Purdy's first three games — relieving injured Jimmy Garoppolo against Miami, his first start against Tampa Bay and playing injured in Seattle — told him the rookie could lead the team to the playoffs. When he sat down in February and rewatched all of Purdy's starts, Shanahan was convinced he had his quarterback for the 2023 season.

For him, the game in Seattle wasn't just about grit or toughness. The situation also brought out Purdy's calm and maturity. He said a young quarterback might tell his head coach anything to get on the field. Purdy was straightforward throughout.

In short, there was a sense that those four grueling days in December revealed who Purdy was at his core.

"He talked to me the whole way through it and was accurate the whole time," Shanahan said. "And he didn't make excuses for himself, either. He did have bad plays in there and you never heard, 'Oh, it's because I'm hurting.' He wasn't that type of guy. And I think that's why the players really believed in him, too. The poise, the competitor, everything. It was all real. To me, it was, 'All right, this dude you can trust.'"

yeah, Nick Wright annoys me cause he says stupid stuff all the time. when you're asked to lead a team full of vets and guys that are the best at their position - that comes with a lot of pressure. any screw up is magnified, especially when you have a top play caller. he has to play well in order to keep the team competitive and if not, everyone knows is the QBs fault for not being good enough.
instead of a C for captain, we should give him the BCB badge

Tbh the BCB stuff is kind of immature to me. I wouldn't want to have to explain that to young fans lol

The Ringer just updated their QB rankings. Brock Purdy obviously moved up from his spot last year (he was #33 on their rankings after he first debuted last year).

I don't mind people having takes that differ from mine, I do get a tad annoyed when someone has a strong opinion of him when they've clearly not watched him play. can't believe people get paid to write about players they've def not watched. lol asinine.

That's absolutely embarrassing. How the hell can these people pretend to be professionals when they CLEARLY AND OBVIOUSLY have never spent five fing minutes watching him...

EDIT: that appears to be for Jimmy. Maybe they edited it.
