Interesting convo.

I'm surprised Cosell was complimentary of Brock. I think he knows that one game doesn't make a player. Brock has had too many good games for one game to sway anyone's opinion of his abilities.

You can't say that after 1 game against the best defense. In the wind and rain. Minus 2 very explosive weapons. It's absurd. He still led a game winning drive and the kicker missed. He was not going to go undefeated. The body of work still looks very good. It would be hard to repeat this because you can't have this much against him again. It was a lot of factors against him.

Frankly SD, I am very excited about an upcoming QB matchup between Brock and Kirk, that is good QB play imo

I think we will get back on track and Brock plays well too.

Also if Purdy is that bad how would you rate Allen, Burrow & Jackson who played Cleveland and sure did not look like MVP's.

Greg cosell said Burrow missed 8 easy throws last weekend.

let that sink in… it's so hard to normalize performances across the league simply because there is so many hours of games each week. We just default to assuming these other QBs are just great all the time.

It shows he has come around on Brock since he rated him low on accuracy in college. 10 very good-to-elite games will do that for your rep.

Hurts is the pretender, I was ringing that bell last year when the country thought he should be MVP. With that line, defense and skill positions I'm only shocked he couldn't pretend longer.

Hurts also has five rushing touchdowns.

Purdy has 2 rushing TDs, so they both have 12 TDs passing/rushing through 5 weeks.

They're both good QBs.

If Brock hadn't been picked Mr. Irrelevant, and had instead been signed as a UDFA, NOBODY would be doubting him. It's the fact that he was picked last in the draft that gets people thinking he must be some kind of "system QB" (whatever that means to people these days...like Montana and Young weren't system QBs? Look at their numbers on the Bucs and Chiefs and then compare them to their numbers on the 49ers).

The funny thing is, Purdy actually has better tools than Young did, aside from foot speed (which didn't help Young as much as you think, considering he was made of glass like Jimmy and would get up limping at some point every game).

Young is actually 5'10," not 6'1" like he was listed. People don't even know that. He's shorter than Jeff Garcia. Young himself admits he wasn't as tall as listed, yet won't admit just how short he is. I'm guessing he's insecure.

He also had THE weakest arm of any QB to ever start in the NFL. He never topped 60 yards at the NFL QB competition in the distance contest. Jerry Rice and John Taylor both had stronger arms than Young, and funny enough, Young was actually faster than both of them. That's really telling when it comes to evaluating what actually matters for success at certain positions in the NFL, versus perception.

There are many skill position players who can throw further than many QBs in the NFL. Why don't they play QB? Well, because QB is mostly a mental thing.

Christian McCaffrey can throw a TD pass to a wide open receiver down field. So can Emmanuel Sanders.

But they can't sit in the pocket and have a photographic memory of where everybody is, and then make the quick decisions to get the ball out to the open man.

People go on and on about Purdy's arm strength, but his arm is still stronger than Young's was. I would bet you guys some money that Purdy could top 60 yards in the distance contest, unlike Young.

To give you an idea of how weak Young's arm was, the furthest he could throw it in a game was barely over 50. And I think he needed wind help to even do that. Jimmy threw it 55 yards in the air in the dome vs. the Saints in 2019 on his TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders. Jimmy's arm is obviously weak, but it wasn't as weak as Young's.

Even Montana, who obviously had no cannon, had a stronger arm than Young, despite what fans may think. I think fans assume Young had a good arm because of his reputation as an "athlete," so they think of Michael Vick and other guys who had the big arms to go with the foot speed. Not the case. Young's original coaching staff at BYU didn't want him to play QB.

Here's what he looked like trying to throw the deep ball. Look familiar?:

(at 1:33:55)

(at 8:14)

(at 38:30)

They both have weak arms and try to overcompensate.

The 49ers have never been a good deep throwing team since it started winning Super Bowls. Brock does everything else at an elite level, which is all that matters in this scheme.

Young had a weak arm and was made of glass?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I have a feeling you weren't around to watch much of Steve Young actually play.
It's frodos nasty finger. Ban his ass.

Look I watch a ton of games every week, a ton of QBs, a ton of good and bad quaterbacking and Brock Purdy is fine. The Niners are fine really, I think.
He wasn't gonna be great every game. At some point he would have a bad game. He's only 23 years old and in his second season.
And still, they should have won this game between the missed field goal and every mistakes the Niners did during the game.
The good thing with Purdy is that he's not too high or too low. He's the kind of guy that after a great game will say "Yeah but I missed this throw." and after a bad game "What is done is done, let's focus on the next game.".
