Unfortunately, these "system QB" takes are just going to continue for Purdy as long as we have a stacked offense + Kyle Shanahan. For him to get the respect he deserves, it's going to take Brock having success with everyone getting injured--- and NOBODY is wishing for injuries.

Frustrating, because Brock Purdy is operating the Shanahan offense at its highest level since Matt Ryan won the MVP and took the Falcons to the Super Bowl.

Yesterday an article in The Athletic debunked all those "system" claims along with "weapons", play-callers, and the rest.

MVP seasons are ALWAYS about a QB on teams with all those pieces in place. Purdy is having one of those seasons.

I've only watched a handful of their segments, but I appreciate the lack of bias.
LeSean McCoy super loves the Eagles and openly voiced it, but he showed great respect for what the 49ers did, and then went into the X's and O's of why the 49ers were great.

Meanwhile, guys like Skip Bayless.. so many of his segments are just driven by his love for the Cowboys and it's pretty much a fan debate about "my team vs yours."

it's almost like we need Darnold to start, so we can comp the variance between another QB in this O and BP. Or what if you looked at JGs 2022 and extrapolate to get a full season of numbers w/ CMC. Maybe that's what these types are doing?
it's the is it the QB or system debate, and those are the folks on the extreme end of thinking it's the system, Steve Ruiz of course also

We do not need Darnold to start.

Nope nope nope

Brock doesn't give a damn about them as long as he's winning and he gets paid. He knows that the team knows his worth as well as the real fans so what media meatheads say ain't worth squat!

I don't recall if Tom Brady was ever called a system QB, per se, but I know he got a lot of flack early in his career for similar criticisms to what Brock's getting.
I also don't remember when he shed those criticisms. The 16-0 season when Randy Moss joined the team? Or was it just, in the long run, he just had continuous success despite having different offensive players and coordinators over the years?

All in all, it really is just noise. The only time Purdy and the 49ers organization really need to have the discussion of his value is when Contract Negotiations happen. I think we don't need to have that discussion for another year?

Brady was criticized for winning rings with a defense. Early in his career those Super Bowl teams were known for their defense. As you mentioned, it wasn't till he finally got Moss that he flipped the narrative.

I wouldn't even worry about it since they tried to say Joe and Steve were system guys. As of recently, they also like to bring up how they had the GOAT in Jerry Rice.

The "System QB" tag is so dumb.
Like. What do they want QB's to do? Scrap offensive playcalling, and just turn everything into backyard football?

But yeah... it's just noise. Like I said earlier, the only time the question of value comes up is when it's contract negotiation time.

It is definitely very dumb and the most recent or notable "backyard football QB's" are Rodgers and Mahomes today.

Fans like that for some reason. Personally I don't really like it but I see why.

Yeah, I usually don't get into the media chatter anymore. As a fan, I just find myself only watching Jonnydel and JT O'Sullivan's breakdowns.
But I DID tune in to watch the hot takes when we destroyed the Cowboys and Eagles this season. Just good television.

That's *exactly* what they want to see. To these types Mahomes isn't elite because he runs Reid's system so well; he's elite because he can improve a sidearm pass and other such "team on my back" plays. This has been the way "elite" QB has been defined ever since Wilson and Seahawks won the SB in 2013.

I agree it's a dumb label and seems to have a negative connotation. When Brady went to the Bucs, Bruce Arians wanted to instill the "no risk it, no biscuit" passing attack (attack deep). Brady said no, he wanted to go with a ball control passing attack with more audibles at the line of scrimmage - stuff he did in NE. Guess that means Brady is a system QB.
