I hear you. My opinion though is if Purdy waited a bit longer, the CB would have kept going up field with Deebo, and made that throw a lot tougher. And then Aiyuk would be much closer to the sideline, making that throw even harder. So Purdy made his decision at the right time. And I'm not saying it would have been a bad decision to throw to Deebo, I just don't think he would have been as open as JT was making it sound.
Right but even that potential 'issue' would be lessened with great arm strength. Brock simply has to throw with great anticipation to be a great QB. Had that corner followed Deebo, that's a busted coverage on Aiyuk and a laser eliminates or at least significantly reduces the sideline/space issue.
We can still dominate as we did without hitting every potential downfield opportunity.
Has there ever been a QB who threw with great anticipation AND had a cannon? Marino maybe, is the only possibility I can think of but I'd have to go back and watch some all-22 of his games. I guess what I'm saying is I'll take what Purdy is doing versus a QB with a rocket arm who has to wait to see a WR be open to pull the trigger. I'd imagine at this point the rest of the fan base feels the same way.
Agree with Furlow but i am flummoxed as to why or what is the purpose of a cannon. Definitions vary but a guy with a cannon can kneel on the 5 yd line and throw to the other end zone. I've seen only a couple. Jon Elway could do it. Hell, Kap could do it. May have seen Marino come close. And hard to believe, but Jim McMahon (old Bears Qb) could come close.
But the question is , "to what end?" A cannon is useless without the touch, the finesse, the acute judgement in depth perception, knowing speed of individiual WRs, and so on… so why all the talk about "cannon"? Joe never had a cannon, but he sure as hell knew how to lead guys whether in close or 35 yards down range. He did, however, have superb touch, judgement of depth , knew perfectly just how fast JT (John Taylor) or Jerry could go and those guys practiced, practiced, practiced.
It's no secret, but Brock is dialed in to #11, and Aiyuk seems to have a RoC (radius of catch) exceeding 8 feet or more. Hell you get in the right area code for Brandon and it's money. Same for Deebo…Kittle? Yup, yup…McCaff? Yup. And Jauan is coming on nicely also.
Cannon, "shammon"…I just don't see a place for it in NFL, yet you always hear, "Man that guy's got a cannon". So the heck what?
Nah, I'll take the last guy picked in his draft over anybody else you want to name. Hurts? You really think he's a better QB than Brock? Man i don't. There are some really good touch passers out there and Burrow, plus a couple AFC pals , and a couple in NFC are not too shabby. But you put Brock up against anyone, and I'll take him every time over one of them. Cool, calm , collected, knows how to jig and dance out of trouble, great , great reads and super fast processing, PLUS the really sweet touch and terrific sense of where Aiyuk, MCC, Deebo, George, even Jauan, will be in crossing , going vertical, or whatever.
He's really just gotten one year of NFL play under his belt and his QBing is impressive beyond anyone's expectations. Why? Well, maybe it is because he was a 4 yr starter in the BIG 10, against the best and toughest , and he was blessed with terrific hand eye coordination, and a sweet , beautiful touch.
Go back and look at how many qBs from BIG 10 or SEC started and played all 4 yrs…the list is not long, and our guy is on it. He had FOUR yrs of pretty good high quality football before he ever got here , plus he was blessed with great HC and QB coaches.
And no, he doesn't have a cannon…but how many times have we seen him throw 35-40 yarder on the money? Answer: a lot. And yes, he has good touch on short range and mid range also. But in sum, this kid is the best thing to happen to us in years…at least 23-24 yrs, anyway.
