Cam Newton was a 1 read and run QB who's career faded just as quickly as his athleticism.
Very similar to Kaepernick in that regard.
Because of the way that Cam actually won NFL MVP and how he was able to stand up to SEA I would have to give Cam the edge. Cam was running QB power on SEA defensive front breaking tackle extending plays and breaking their backs during his peak looking like a man playing amongst boys out there. He was not an elite pocket QB processor but he had his time to shine and he did so he has his right to his opinion wrong as it may be
Cam was no steve young, though. Cam, to me, was a glorified running back playing QB. He can do the Kaepernick read option stuff because it's a one read offense. Either run it or throw it. Simple offense. Cam, no doubt, was a great *athlete* with an Olympian physique. But was he a real QB at the levels of the best? Nawwww.....
As much as we can say Cam Newton wasn't that great as a conventional QB, the guy was an MVP in 2015 and took his team to the Super Bowl. He's an example that, yes, you CAN make it work with a superlative athletic QB and scheme. I'm just not sure if a guy can play hero ball QB like that have sustained success.
I think that, as some have already said, I think you need to evolve. Cam did end up losing in the Super Bowl to an (elite) Broncos defense that made him play conventional QB. We just throttled the Eagles two weeks ago, forcing Jalen Hurts to play as a conventional QB, and he couldn't do it. Steve Young himself was running around making plays in his early career, but I think his career really took off when he learned to play the QB position... where he could truly stretch defenses with his arm AND legs.
A QB like Brock Purdy, who has the arm strength and the ability to read an NFL defense... he's going to be able to have success at QB for a very long time. He barely has 1 full season under his belt. It's exciting to see how he can grow as a QB in the years to come.
