Walsh spotted Jerry Rice on TV. He was watching college football on TV and saw Rice and said - we're going to take him, he'll be a super star. (I'm paraphrasing) but essentially that's what happened and how Bill spotted Rice for the first time. Walsh was able to spot talent just by glancing at players. Same with Charles Haley, he had a very low grainy film of Charles playing at James Madison and said he wanted him. The rest is history. Walsh was an unbelievable talent spotter/evaluator/developer.
