We don't know if Brock is the type of player who can transcend a mediocre and average roster, because that's not his situation and hopefully won't be anytime soon. What he has done is play really well in a great system with great players around him. No complaints. Who gives a s**t what casual fans or hot take analysts think.

To that point, many greats never showed if they could transcend a mediocre/average roster. Montana, for example, rarely had a mediocre roster. Arguably only the 1980 comeback against the Saints showed he could transcend one. Otherwise his teams were always good to great roster-wise, with only the strike shortened 1982 team being a losing record, non-playoff team.

The 1981 team wasn't anywhere near being a great roster on offense. The had a young Montana in his first year as the starter and Dwight Clark. The rest were okay but not great. They had a terrific defense but even that was built around 3 rookies in the defensive backfield and a midseason trade that brought Fred Dean.

After the Niners beat the Cowboys to go to that first SB Tom Landry said "It has to be Montana. There's nothing else there."

It's not just the players. It's the HoF coach and the cutting edge offensive system.

Our roster and coaching staff is top tier. This core group has been in SB contention without Purdy at QB as well.

All of it together is why we are great. We don't have to undersell one aspect of the team to prop up another.

Hopefully, Purdy can transcend mediocre playcalling in the big stage next time he gets there.

It's having that Tom Brady kind of feeling. Late in the game, it always felt like Tom was just gonna take over and not make it close. I feel like I can get to that."
...Wow!

It's almost a different swagger from Brock this year. It's no longer "hey I'm happy to be here and believe I can help".

its "I'm one of the best effin QBs on planet earth and I belong here".

I love it. I really think this season is going to be magical from Brock & Kyle

Agree, and I'll add that hopefully he's gotten stronger in the arm department too.

You were gaining velocity on your passes coming out of Iowa State into your rookie season. Has that continued? Were you able to make any gains in that regard this offseason?
"I think so. Just like little mechanical things down in Jacksonville that we worked on and honed in on, just in terms of being an efficient thrower. There's a guy that comes in and does like the 3D motion capture stuff, and we look at my mechanics and try to apply it to my on-field training and get more power out of my hips and all the stuff that goes into it. But I was down there for a good month. So, we were actually able to chip away at some things, where last year I was there for a couple weeks. It was more about my elbow rehab and then I had come back here early. So I got some good time away to work on it. And I do feel like I got better just with my arm and mobility and strength. But like I said earlier, that's something that I have to maintain as we go."

Yes. The 1981 49er offense was average in talent outside Montana, but had the ahead-of-the-curve coaching and system, to a much larger degree than Kyle Shanahan has ever introduced. And as stated the defense was excellent, so overall the team was not mediocre/average. Even giving the obvious props to Montana about raising the bar for the offense overall (and he did), he didn't will that team to a SB with a crap coach, bland offensive playmakers and a poor defense, which is apparently what the critics of Purdy want to see him do before accepting him as a really good QB.

Again, Purdy is being treated like Brady was before his 50 TD 2007 season. It didn't matter that Brady had won three SBs and was putting up solid numbers. To many he was being carried by his head coach and a great defense to those championships and, while clutch, wasn't anywhere as good as Peyton at willing his team to wins based only on his pure will despite mediocre talent around him. The stupidity of this argument by these people is that it ignores Moss being a pretty big difference for Brady for his regular season numbers, while also ignoring the really talented players on those Manning Colts teams.

TLDR: It's just a dumb argument to make.

Same. I think he's going to be insanely dominant this year. Going to have a serious chip on his shoulder. Going to have us setting new records.

if Brock takes another step forward, and we obviously stay healthy, I think we are champions.

from the article, I love this quote.
"There were moments last year in games where I would just — I don't know what it was in the situation — but we'd be up and it's, 'All right, be smart with the ball,' or 'Let's just make sure we don't mess up.' I want to break through that and get to this point of just being dominant, for four quarters, man. That's my mindset."
