QB Brock Purdy Thread

I wonder if Sunday's game will finally put to rest that favorite take of a lot of the National TV pundits who like to say that "any QB" could get the job done in Kyle's system. No way to know for sure of course, but one has to suspect that if Brock had been in, the game would have been a lot more competitive than it was.

I can, however quote 49er Superbowl o-lines... And I totally disagree with the value of a stout line...

I also think Purdy is a more then franchise QB, with his attacking mentality...I can't think of a QB that would benefit more from the best online he can get.

Yeah he is going to get hit from free blitzers, every QB does...but at least a great line can help make that a predictable rush from the edge instead of instant pressure from the middle

The 49er lines weren't good in protection after 1986. Guy McIntyre in particular was poor in protection. Steve Wallace was very beatable, as was Bubba Paris, who was frequently out of shape. Harris Barton...it's worth noting how difficult a position right tackle is to play...but he was far from dominant. Jesse Sapolu was a perfect example of what I say about most teams using a mediocre lineman as the center and keeping him because he knows the scheme and makes the calls.

The problem the 49ers are having with Brendel is they don't scheme to make him the help guy. Defenses get him in one-on-one matchups and expose him. Kyle and his staff are just bad at coaching football.
Rule Number One, people.

  1. Be respectful of our online community. Contribute to an engaging conversation rather than resort to personal attacks, threats, or anything that may be considered offensive.

There is some interesting discussions in this thread, but several posters seem to need to make snide and personal comments in their posts. It ruins the thread and encourages others to be equally obnoxious.

I'll settle for something better than the 38th best C in the league.

This is partly why I have 0 concerns about Brock, this offense hands the protection calls to the Center, making him arguably the most important part of the OL and we arguably have the worst in the NFL...and not even just among the starters.

It's also party why I'm concerned about Kyle...how is he allowing this to happen? I don't know if the plan/hope was Feliciano getting healthy but we can't have Brendel terrorizing the offense. At this point I'd rather see if Zakelj can do any better. Hard to imagine it can get much worse.

But Brock to me while showing some warts has had to battle a ton of adversity this season and while he's had a couple of stinkers it has been a team effort...led by Brendel.

His numbers pale vs last season but they're good enough when you account for injuries/poor play around him that I have no doubt he's a guy we can build around.

He may not be Mahomes level but he's more than good enough for US. Invest in improving the OL around him and keep drafting well and we'll be back to winning games consistently.
I don't think resigning Brock will break the bank.

They'll find a way to make it work so we aren't paralyzed.
I am totally cool with letting Brock sit out for a while. Why risk more injury with this s**t team..and Cold Shower Brenda being on the o-line? Let Allen/Dobbs/whomever else play and protect our most important player. The season is over anyway. Allen is no bueno though. We need to clean house on several players.

telling Brock and whoever to sit out is like asking us posters to not post until next camp

In a nutshell.

This is a joke right? You want to call a game where your center gets help all the time?

It's also one thing to point out the flaws in Shanahan and flat out saying he and his staff are "bad" at coaching football. That's a damn joke

The biggest issue is the fact that Brendel is still starting...bash Shanahan for going into the year with that being a thing. The issue of course is I strongly believe the backup plan was Feliciano but at this point I think it's negligence to let Brendel go out there without at least trying someone else to see if they can do better.
Is he practicing??

How do you know what they do in prcatice. They may have tried someone else or at tleast discussed it. Who else do they have other than Nugent who's on the practice squad. He started at Michigan but he must have some issues if they don't think he's ready to be promoted. I know he's a little undersized.

That's what coaches have always done. Not literally every play but the majority. Centers aren't supposed to be singled up in protection very often.

Yes, Shanahan and his staff are bad at coaching football. Look at the penalties. Whose fault is that? Look at his refusal to let Brock call protection audibles, even though every other coach in football allows this. He gets QBs injured through free blitzers. Most of the hits on this team's QB are from blitzes, NOT from linemen being beaten. Most sacks given up by linemen are the QB's fault. QBs ultimately control the sacks, unless their coach is incompetent the way Kyle is.

He does a poor job of building in hot reads, as Kurt Warner noted. You don't throw backside against the blitz because if that's covered, you get crushed.

He hires horrible special teams coaches and his special teams have been terrible for 8 consecutive years.

He keeps going back to the Screenbo trick plays, even though it's clear teams know how to completely neutralize that.

Red zone offense is almost always on the play caller. Guys like Andy Reid scheme up red zone touchdowns with ease.

His teams are always injured, even more than other teams' players. That is almost always partly on the head coach.

He treats CMC like it's at least 20 years ago. No RB can handle that number of touches, but he acts as though he WANTS to injure CMC, even though Mason has been pretty successful.

You can't ignore all of his dumb personnel decisions. That's not coaching, but it's another problem with him. He is responsible for all of the big picks, including taking middle round stiff RBs every year who don't succeed in the scheme.

He doesn't scheme situational football. He doesn't care about down and distance. He'll run an end around to Screenbo on 2nd and 2.

Also, Feliciano was TERRIBLE in protection. You don't remember how often he got flat-out run over?

When it takes 5 HOF linemen to satisfy the fan base with the o-line, it's either on the head coach, the QB, or both. In this case, it's clear that while Brock isn't the best at avoiding sacks, he's not the biggest problem.
Brock has to get his arm right contract is looming
Brock only needs one throw. All good ! ?
