you build around brock but you always want QB2. 2018, 2020, 2022 we see the importance of depth. Allen may need to be upgraded. Dobbs didn't really work out here.

The contract matters if the thinking is we build around Purdy. The problem with the upcoming contract is that the 49ers are much more top heavy with high-priced contracts than they were when they signed Jimmy G. The team also has some really "bad" contracts based on extending contracts for Deebo or having high-priced players underperform their contract (again Deebo). I'm also really worried about how BA will look coming back from his injury. The team could have a good number of high-priced players not carrying their weight or will have off loaded players who the team has dead cap to eat.

With that said, there is no way the 49ers can "build around" Purdy if he gets 60m per year. Heck, even if Purdy's contract is back loaded a bit and he's cheap during his first few years of the contract I don't think that helps the team that much. Clearly the 49ers need to retool the team in lots of areas and I think that will take time to draft and develop players at DL, OL, and safety. Probably will need to look at WR if BA isn't the same and Deebo is released. Oh, let's not forget about RB and LB.

Baker didn't get paid that.

first off baker has cap hits that average 40m over next two seasons. so saying baker dollars isn't some huge discount. brock will get paid. he was never cut and a reclamation project like baker. he was in the mvp convo.

Baker's APY is $33.3M. Folks love to talk about those numbers. He got $50M GTD

baker was never cut, he got traded to the panthers and then asked to be released. He was a FA after that.

Brock has had one amazing full season so far. This yr he's 19th in comp %, 13th in yards, 19th in TDs, and 12th in INTs. I tried telling everyone that his TD to INT% from his rookie yr wasn't sustainable…anything thing that separated Brock from Jimmy was the ability to score in the RZ, I don't know what the f**k is going on but it's a f**king disaster right now there.

I understand he will get paid more than baker because it's wasn't the same team that drafted him. Brock wasn't some elite level 1st rd pick either. I hope SF doesn't just give him whatever he wants.

I doubt he'll sign a Mayfield type contract at 32m per year. But, frankly, Purdy would be smart to sign a team friendly contract and make it up by selling Toyotas and tractors.

That Tua contract is too much imo. I know it's not gonna be the baker deal. s**t Carr got 4yrs $150M. I feel like those numbers make more sense then tua's 4yrs $212M. Again always about that GTD $

He's going to get something like the Tua contract or a bit less.

My guess is 4y 200M with that number possibly shifting up if he plays well the next 6 games. The 49ers may try to create an out after 2 years also.

you can build around him, you just say goodbye to deebo, juice, greenlaw, ward, among others. guys on the rook contract have to perform. put young guys on cost control deals in a position to get meaningful snaps. coach those young guys up.

I think this is right. Tua is at 55m per year, right? I'm guessing Purdy takes 50 to 55m per year.

Yes, you can still build around Purdy but the issue will be that even if he takes 50m per year I think the next few years are going to be very tight with the cap because the team can't --- for example --- just release Deebo, draft another WR, and save money. Releasing Deebo, after having extended his contract last season, really only removes Deebo from the team and doesn't free up much salary space. I'm not sure what the Hargrave numbers look like but my guess is we are in a similar boat with him. I'm not arguing that these players should remain on the team but just saying that their impact to the salary doesn't end just because the team moves on from them.
Here are the current top 10 QBs by APY and their Total Guaranteed amount, per overthecap.
Prescott - $60M - 231M
Burrow - $55M - 219M
Love - $55M - 160M
Lawrence - $55M - $200M
Tua - $53M - $167M
Goff - $53 - $170M
Herbert - $52M - $193M
Jackson - $52M - $185M
Hurts - $51M - $179M
Murray - $46M - $160

Mayfield - $33M - $50M

Most of the above contracts run through 2029. Hence, we can use these numbers to estimate what Purdy will get. Right now I see Purdy settling for five years at $50M and $170M guaranteed. I believe he will outperform several of those above him if the team can stay healthy but we can say that about any of the others as well - it all depends on health in this team game.

My guess is Goff's play will really decline once Ben Johnson goes. I'm so happy for Goff but clearly he's a Jimmy G. type of QB who has been helped out a great deal by the play calling and great RB play.

Baker signed cheap because he was a former bust who put out one year of good tape.

ben johnson is irrelevant. they have a ton of talent is my take on detroit. lot of QBs can look good if you wall up the OL and have killer playmakers

The only way to get Deebo off the team is a post-June 1 cut. That saves $5.2M in cap, but big dead money.
Hargrave $20,7M post-June 1. Only $3.2M pre-June 1.
Others that save:
Juice - $3M pre, $4.6M post-June 1
Floyd - $1.4M pre - $7.9 post.
Brendel - $1.4M post,

We currently have $49M in cap room for 2025. It will go up but we won't know how much until March.

go back to 2017 jimmy was pretty darn good. and if you look at jimmy he never really lost here, or had a down year. he was injured 2018 and 2020 and the team fell apart. but when healthy we were elite. this looks to be a losing season, and brock has played the whole year but 1 game. if you go back on baker i was laughed at for saying he's pretty good, which he is. he had a down period where he was a street FA.

We also had an elite defense back then, that's something we don't have right now due to Injuries and a DC who doesn't know he's doing.
this is where coaching comes into play. look at mcvay he drafts puka, fiske, verse and they are all stars from the jump. gotta play the kids and perhaps most important, coach them up, with a bigtime QB under serious contract.
