QB Brock Purdy Thread

One thing we all should learn. We need to stop going overboard with praise every time a new QB comes in and has a few good games. Just as it sometimes takes time for them to learn it also sometimes takes time for their limitations to show up. We saw it a little with Alex Smith but he never really had a chance with the coaching mess the Niners had then. Then we thought Kap was going to be the next big thing until we realized that he was lost in the pocket nd the league learned how to stop his runs. Next came JG with his 5 wins to end a season followed by an early season injury the next year. He comes back and helps get the team to a SB but collapses in the late 4th quarter. Then anthor injury. Warning! Now Brocks limitations are showing up when he doesn't have the OPOY.

There's a saying called the Peter prciple that goes something like this. We will all rise until we eventually reach our level of incompetence. It's the same with OCs and DCs that never become good HCs. It's one level too high.

Unfortunately, this season has been pretty much a complete wash that I'm not ready to make any conclusions. Well....there are exceptions.....starting with the Oline.

That's also Kyle's weakness as an offensive designer though.

that's the truth. i think what was so impressive on brock is QB3 and he was dealing. you don't see the composure from young QBs like that. he also navigated that injury like a champ. to have the throw arm go out and get no real offseason was tough and he handled himself well. i was hoping a full offseason would have him playing his best ball. a guess a silver lining is our guys usually ball out in the contract year, and we have to pay that price. maybe we can get a lesser price now.

While I have heard some gripe that Shanahan's system isn't the prototypical for passing the ball, the quarterback has a big say in how much he can transcend they system. It's the next step that Purdy needs to take if he really wants to separate himself from the Kirk Cousins and Jared Goffs of the NFL.

There were quite a few fans calling to transition to a more dropback heavy offense in the offseason. I didn't think it was a good match for the coach or the QB. I think Kyle could theoretically improve here… he'll probably have to. I don't think Brock will ever be suited for it.

Kyle Shanahan is 9-29 without Jimmy or Brock. He is not Andy Reid. He can not succeed with mediocre QBs.

And what's Andy Reid record without Donovan McNabb and Patrick Mahomes?

He is like 16-24 without Vick(20-20), Garcia(5-1), Alex Smith(19-10), McNabb(92-49) and Mahomes(67-18)

Reid has had multiple QB that history will probably slot above Jimmy G.

He can't beat man to man and he can't throw in the rain, big limitations

Rain is true, but guys dropping very accurate passes is on them, not the qb.
I disagree that he can't throw in the rain, there were good and bad throws last night he was inconsistent.

Whether I stated it outright or not, I am one of those fans....you really want to find out how good your QB is? You gradually put more and more on his plate. I don't know if he'll ever be anything more than a guy who needs play action to dictate the action but there's only one way to find out. If there is/was a problem, it's still keeping the same mindset in that you can push the ball downfield. Play action opens that stuff up more than most everything else, but there have been several plays that could've been made underneath that not only would've moved the chains....but that too, eventually opens up the bigger chunk type plays.

I think we're getting some answers regardless of whether it's intentional or not. I just wouldn't like to think that we went into a possible contending season with the priority to find out whether our QB can handle a type of offense that isn't our speciality. I feel like we already should have known that answer anyway.

Rivera is totally right. Purdy is a game manager. In no way is he a game changer and should be paid as such.

I think the larger problem was the OL

the current guys running the club made jimmy garoppolo the highest paid QB in NFL history.

Yea, I don't know about that my man. It looked that way for about 2/3 of last season.

Do you mean last season where he had a 69.4% completion rate, 4,200 yards (franchise record), 31/11 TD/INT, and a league-leading 113 rating?

Right now, in his worst year, he is ranked #15 (just below Matthew Stafford) among all starting QBs without his go-to WR, no CMC, Trent has been hobbled for most of the year, down to the #4 RB, and the list goes on.

He will get paid.

That was one of the main things people were talking about. Rebuilding the line to transition to a more pass centered offense. Not a good plan with our coach and QB.
