Even with the cap increasing, we're going to hit a wall somewhere. If he needs a solid supporting cast, which I believe he does, than we should pay him accordingly.

Purdy becoming the highest paid QB in the league may be inevitable since that's just how the league operates, though.

I'll be pulling for him on gameday regardless.

i'd pump breaks on him being highest paid for 2 reasons. 1 he ended up turning in a down year. that doesn't mean nothing. that means something and if the year is down, the deal should go down. 2, i don't know how much he could get on the open market. i don't know what team would just pony up $60m aav for this guy as QB1. i can't see any team doing that. i don't think teams would even want him as QB1. lot of QB1 jobs are filled, and those that aren't, teams want what they always want, those high end measurables. they would take a rook on a cost controlled deal over a guy with pick 262 traits at some absurd 60m aav. so we are probably the one team where brock is 'the man'.

I am sure it will be one those contracts that 90% of fans will see the headline of Brock Purdy signs 5 for 300M. Then 20 minutes later all the insides come out with 49ers can get out of this pretty cleanly after 3 years and 120M.

I would be fine with this. And this is what the contract should be - we should be able to escape for 3 and 120m if Brock continues to regress. If he regains his form from the first two years then he gets the full bag.

It has nothing to do with potential. It's all about whether or not to pay him like a top 5 QB. The market has completely gone crazy and there's no reason he should be paid the highest amount in the NFL. NFL owners and the payers have lost their minds.

That's always been the argument I heard. We don't pay for past performance we pay for future performance. If they think he can develop into one of the best they will pay him that way
Idgaf what we pay him, just do your job

No one said he needs to find anything right now. Brock isn't a FA. He can play out his deal then renegotiate or get tagged.

Paying someone stupid money just cause is no different then giving away a bunch of 1sts and only playing him in a couple random games

Very good post NY!

just not understanding of reality imo. didn't we pay BA after 3, nick after 3, deebo after 3 and on it goes? so on QB1, who makes nothing, we're just gonna tell him to shut up and like it? hard to see that.. i mean that may be what NY wants, but is it what will go down?

NY is out of his mind with this "play out your contract" nonsense. That only works with fringe players, which clearly Purdy is not. He is absolutely not going to play out a lame duck year on this whack rookie contract and risk injury, nor will Kyle/Lynch even hint at that. Absurd discussion.

I agree that while they could play hardball and it technically makes financial sense, but it's not how things are normally done. In fact, I hope they get it done lightening fast so they can move on to the rest of the roster.

As for the contract itself who is Purdys agent and what is his reputation? I can never remember this crap, but that will be a big factor.

Clearly he's not the best talent evaluator when it comes to quarterbacks so if he goes to Lynch / Jed and tells them to pay the man what he wants there's a good chance he screws us again.

my personal opinion is Kyle's stint in SF is about to end. Either he does it himself after this season (goes on a major bender, decides to call it quits so he can enter rehab), OR he does it the hard way by sinking this team in 2025 with his idiotic decisions / game plans. In any case, don't want his stench on this team beyond that so if we end up having to keep Brock at max contract at 60m and he's not worth it, then no thanks. Pay him what he's worth. If he's playing hardball like idiots eg BA, TW then either make him finish his contract next year or trade him…

Put your bias aside and realize Kyle isn't going anywhere. Time to move off that silly debate. Talk about something else, maybe something that's realistic.

Also the moment Brock is paid it all but solidifies Kyle being here even longer. You're gonna have to deal with it.

If next year we don't make the playoffs, ain't no amount of excuses from you guys (injuries, refs, bad weather) that's gonna protect him. I suspect he'll be fired, or even better do us a favor and just pull a Campbell and leave….

you're just convinced that next year we'll be a juggernaut once again because magically the team will be 100% uninjured. That's just not going to be the case…

Understood. Trust we all understand. No need to continue force feeding us your "point"

Your take about Kyle being fired or walking away is 100x worse than NY's take about trying to force Purdy to play out the final year of his rookie contract. Plus you're not even a Niners fan so why do you insist on having these conversations?

Oh yes he will.

He is not going to take the chance of another QB coming in here to take advantage of all these weapons and this QB friendly offensive system. Be it another QB draft pick (that has similar intangibles to Brock), or a surprise released QB FA, or a QB already on this team.

THAT is how Brock got to be the starter, and in the position he is in today. Took full advantage of being the QB of this stacked offense and showed how the offense can/should look.

If the goal were to be to get him to play the final year of his deal so we could evaluate him further, this would be a key part of the leverage the 49ers would need. They would have to bring in a Darnold-type FA, or spend real draft assets on a rookie. Much more difficult to hold out if there's a quality piece waiting for an opportunity. We'll be held hostage if we have a Dobbs/Allen like QB room behind Purdy.

That said, I wouldn't bet the team goes this route as much as it is the clearly smarter play IMO.
Purdy will get 3 years at 75 million. If he doesn't play well he will just become an expensive backup.
