There's nothing contradictory at all. They thought from word of mouth that he had those attributes, and they had no way of knowing he didn't because there was no combine to test those attributes.
When teams like a player, they will often want to believe in whatever the schools and other people associated with the player tell them about that player. In the old days, teams used to dismiss what players they liked actually ran at the combine or pro days and write down whatever time the college team's coaches and/or PR department told them they ran because they wanted to believe in that player's physical attributes being as good as possible.
He barely threw the ball in college, hence there was not enough evidence for Kyle to shoot down the load of BS Lynch was selling him.
