You're asking in hindsight with the knowledge that Brees is a top 15 ish QB to ever play the game.

But when the saints traded for him, he was hurt and considered tool limited.

They didn't trade for him. They signed him as a free agent. His only concern was he just suffered a shoulder injury. He was already established as a very good QB.

in a twist of irony (for this conversation) the Chargers chose the big 1st rounder over him!

brees can throw every route. he's maybe the most accurate QB ever. he was just 6 flat. everyone knew he could play. also that O once brees got to the Saints (as a FA) was spread it out and let the QB be the offense. we don't do anything remotely like that. we are gonna run all day and run some more. so i think about what QB would fit our scheme, vs what QB would fit a spread pass attack. if we look at Baltimore they want to run, and they put up like 300 rush yds on the Steelers. they have a QB who can run next to a RB who can do it at a high level. i think that could be exciting with shanahan. naturally with play action, you want to shoot it downfield. so that's what i think would compliment this O.

Can Brock play at an elite level without being surrounded with All Pro talent?

This year would suggest he can't.

But thats what the market dictates. That is what I have been trying to get people to grasp on this site. Its not up to the 49ers to chance how the NFL does things with QB contracts. If you want to say 10 QBs are totally overpaid, I wont argue. But thats the cost of doing business with a non-rookie/non-end of his career QB.

The right move for this team to make is to have Purdy as our QB. Period.

Two things:

1. The market does not dictate that we agree to a potentially bad contract.

2. It's pure speculation what Purdy would make on the open market.

This idea that we just have to pay Purdy because other teams paid their guy is simply not the case.

This is the correct analysis. The market rate is what Purdy would fetch from other teams, not what other teams paid their own QB. Dak Prescott had some strange leverage over Jerry Jones but I think that ended up as a bad deal for the Cowboys.

I don't see other teams paying a market resetting contract to Brock Purdy whenif he's a free agent. The team also has leverage in that he's not a free agent. He's only eligible for an extension now. I think he'll get a offered deal in the TuaLawrence range. Then the next move will be on him. Obviously the agent's advice will play a role, how big a role is the question.

Then what the f**k are you defending man? I've said Brock is good not elite. Yet here you are arguing with me. What are you arguing about then. Tell me do you think he's an elite level QB in the league right now?

And what does Brees have to do with anything? He was basically a 1st rd pick. He had monster hands and didn't wilt when the weather wasn't 75 and sunny. He had perfect mechanics and while he didn't have a cannon, he had no problem making every throw and was one of the most accurate QBs in NFL history.

Maybe just one day Brock could possibly be that. Who knows, I sure f**king hope so. I'm also not gonna hold my breath that he's just this amazing outlier.

he's gonna get paid and he's gonna be the man here. There's things to like, I just hope SF protects themselves in this contract and allows them to get out of it IF he's not "Drew Brees". That thought process shouldn't be seen as some ridiculous thing imo
