We don't want to let him hold out. You can try to sign a player that would indicate a willingness to do so, when you don't want it to happen. It's a gamble.
If you don't want him to hold out, then you have to offer him something. The only way you can get to the point of "no leverage" that you're talking about is by playing hardball, forcing him to go to other teams to seek his value, etc. Is that how you think a QB like Purdy should be treated? If they treat Purdy that way, do you think it will sour his attitude about the franchise? If they treat Purdy that way, do you think other free agents will want to come to SF and deal with ownership that treats their players this way?
