biggest contract in club history and ppl laugh at it. i don't get it
he would be the highest paid 49er and one of the top in the NFL
Why wouldn't he get the biggest deal in club history? He is the most important player on the team.
Didnt the same thing happen with Jimmy G-Strings back in 2018m?
Jimmy reset the market on new cash and AAV. With the team flush with cap space (112M?), they loaded as much money as they could into year 1 to keep the cap hits low in the back end when the team was expected to be more competitive. Paraag said the team would have put more money into year 1, but were limited by the 50/50 rule.
edit - The 50/50 rule requires the cap hit of the 2nd year be at least 50% of the first year. Jimmy's cap hits his first two years were 37M and 20M.
Jimmy signed his contract on February 8th. Kirk Cousin's 84M/3 fully guaranteed contract with the Vikings on March 13th would reset the AAV record. Matt Ryan's 150/5 extension with the Falcons on May 3rd would reset the new cash record. After that was a rush on 4 year extensions that pushed AAVs into the low 30s.
edit - A reminder of what Shanahan said at the time
"Everyone wants to talk the numbers. Man, that's what quarterbacks cost. I don't even think about the numbers," Shanahan said. "I look at everything as, 'Is this a top guy? Is this a guy that has a chance to be one of the better guys in the league?' And once you believe that, you do whatever it takes to keep him. And that's what it takes to keep him."
