what is indisputable? i'm not even an alex guy. i got tired of alex. but i do understand the situation he walked into, vs the situation brock walked into. they were not the same. brock i am sure struggles in 2005, and alex no doubt is better set up in 2022. alex won like 100 games, it's way too early to be doing brock purdy career comps with guys who played a long time.

Purdy was better in 2023 than Alex Smith was at any time in his career.

Purdy was better in 2024 than Alex Smith ever was as a 49er.

also it's hard to just say purdy is better than alex. alex probably right now has the better career, based on volume.

Not surprising coming from you. Jesus Christ.
oh boy..

Attack the arguments, not the person.

Thanks typecast. You're a good man
Alex Smith had a solid career....once he left:

of course he's had the better career by volume. He also has a helluva lot more tenure as well. Where you guys going with this? LoL

That Brock is already a better qb than he ever was. He's even made a pro bowl outright. Alex only went as an alternate

Comeback player due to holding the ball too long
3 Alternate PBs
Award is linked to Comeback

Fun fact: Alex Smith's team has never won a playoff that didnt include his defense turning the opponent over at least 5 times.

Purdy would have won a majority of the playoff games Alex lost.

Lol.., even if true, not sure anybody was more deserving of that award that I can think of.

I still can't believe he played. That was so amazing and dumb.

How it always was with the Chiefs. Defense forces a bunch of TOs, they run the ball, Alex throws for 180 and they get the dub

Alex is the only qb ever to get kicked off of 2 sb caliber rosters in the middle of their windows. That's how bad he was

The cost of keeping Purdy. It's going to keep going up every year we keep him.

This implies that in the future he will certainly be playing well, doesn't it??

I don't blankly assume that a guy so young is going to turn it around, especially given the arsenal at his disposal in 2023. It aint gonna be like that all the time.

You've guaranteed yourself a positive trend in your mind while I'm in the "wait until I see more" camp.

As a GM I'd happily risk cost going up over collapsing teams in the future for the sake of trying to prevent rising costs. Risk is inherent on both sides. If you're able to acknowledge it and can stop guaranteeing future success with so many moving parts and variables you can't predict, you'll see things clearer.

Instead, you judge him solely on the team performance this year. Even in your "wait until I see more" mindset, you are still paying more every year he's on the roster. Whether he takes a market resetting deal, a "prove it" deal, or completely falls off to being a journeyman quarterback. His yearly cash isn't the minimum salary anymore. So if you think he sucked and didn't meet your standard when the team was able to maximize the talent around him due to the available cash, you must obviously think giving him larger share is the wrong course of action. Right?

I've made no assumption on how Purdy will perform in the future. If I had some ability to see into the future, I'd put my energy into winning the lotto for myself. Purdy has done what is necessary to be viewed as a franchise QB because that is how the ownership, front office, and coaching staff view and treat him. He's going to get a franchise QB market contract because the demand for such talent continues to exist and the available supply for such talent continues to be lacking. Every NFL GM will say the same thing when it comes to franchise QBs. The price tag is simply expensive and you pay it when you have your guy.

16 years in "The League" as an NFL QB is nothing to sneeze at. Hats off to Purdy if he sticks around for even half that long.

nice.. he's in that Josh Johnson tier

No. There's no need for judgement right now, as he's under contract. We can "take it easy," as I'm sure Shanahan and Lynch aren't ready to risk their careers with a bad deal. They want to stick around, so they'll wanna see more too if there's no getting around $50M+ cap hits in multiple years.

I didnt judge him solely based on team performance. I'm one of the main posters here that speak out against such stuff. I actually watched him play, and it was a mixed bag, with alot to be desired late in games.

I don't think he sucked, tho. The context of the entire discussion is oncoming need for a new deal,...not some standard that he didn't meet. Not even sure where you're going with that one...

Huh? You then follow that up with saying he's a franchise QB and will command high figures (cap-wise?).

If his performance continues to decline this year, I don't think his price would continue to go up anyways. Supply and Demand.

If you are convinced that his price WILL go up (you did not say "COULD"), then you are convinced he WILL perform well, without a doubt. There's no escaping what you've already said.

At the end of the day, you are certain of the future, so you know there's little risk involved,....while I'm nowhere close to as sure as you are based on what I saw in 2024.
