How'd that work out, not good, they misjudged Jimmy and other teams figured him out and made him ineffective. Same thing with Kap
Since genus49 already covered your other post, I thought I would address this one.
Jimmy actually worked out really well. We were a 1-7 team with a mostly wiped roster and no quarterback, with Lynch and Shanahan pining for the offseason where they could bid on Kirk Cousins. Hoodie gifted Jimmy to Shanahan and after a few weeks of learning the system helped the team win its final 5 games. Under Jimmy, we went to 1 Super Bowl and 3 NFCCGs. His contract didn't inhibit the the team from building around him or after him. He even took cut on his compensation in 2022 knowing he would be the backup to Lance. I wouldn't say teams figured him out. Injuries destroyed his career.
Kaepernick's contract was great. He had to prove himself to stop his salary from de-escalating. Signing bonus was incredibly low. Year-to-year full guarantees were low. The problem was the we found ourselves having to decide whether to risk an injury guarantee if he got hurt again. Baalke, Harbaugh, and his staff sucked at developing players. All they did was maximize the players we had and did little else. Under Tomsula and Kelly, teams simply knew what we were doing offensively. The franchise was such a mess in those years. The Chip Kelly year is still funny to me. Opposing defenders could be heard on the broadcasts calling out the exact play we were running.
Re: "Jimmy actually worked out really well"
Jimmy G was much less effective after teams figured him out; that's why he doesn't play anymore. It's not because of injury. Shanahan was able to make him look better than he was by drawing up great plays for him.
Purdy is better than Jimmy, but Shanahan also makes him look better than he would look on other teams.
Re: Kaepernick's contract was great.
I'm all for signing Purdy to a "great" contract. That's what we should try to do, a great contract. But $50+ mil a year is not a great contract. That's why I think $45 mil/yr for 3-4 years is fair.
And it's well-known that Kap became ineffective once teams figured him out, when they realized that they could double the middle of the field and Kap couldn't beat them throwing it to the sidelines.
