I agree. Right now, I'm just doing what I can with the sample size but it's been very encouraging. He could also start sucking and cost us the season - that's why I don't think we will know what the team will do for next year until we see how Purdy finishes the season.

Brock feels miles ahead of those two as well when speaking to pocket play. Russell had a historic defense and running game while he learned the offense. Kyler already knew the offense from college. But neither relied on the pocket the way Brock is.
Brock really is navigating the pocket like a 10 year classic drop back QB who's had to rely on high level processing to excel.
....and then he's got the short area quickness to escape pressure off that and make off schedule plays.
We've found something special.
TBF, he couldn't be in any better position either but you still have to do it.
Exactly - it's a give and take. We are benefiting from his ridiculous play and he's benefiting from our play calling and playmakers.
If I had to come up with a knock on him, I'd say that if he doesn't get his feet set right - he can make errant throws because he doesn't have a strong enough arm to gun it from every angle.
That's fair. He talked about how important that base is....something he learned from baseball and being a pitcher.
Right, what gives me comfort is that he doesn't seem to be thinking about his mechanics as he is playing - which is what you want, it to be second nature.
the interception to kittle last game - he had the time and space to get his feet right and gun it, I just don't think he saw the defender and made a bad read.
i anticipate we will see that play soon but with Aiyuk. 😈
he didn't see him but he should have made the throw sooner, same with his other throws and his jogging bootlegs... after his two TDs he
s seem to be a little too chill. to me it comes off as cocky than a weakness.
Just because he made a mistake on that play doesn't mean he's cocky. For a rookie making that mistake but didn't let those mistakes rattle him, rather, he moved on quick, maintained his poise and composure and still led his team to win the game. After the game he admitted to his mistakes, he owned them and pledged he will learned from them.
it wasn't just one play as i mentioned in my post.. and i didn't consider it being a mistake or any weakness..That punt to Aiyuk... if purdy doesn't jog in his bootleg he hits Kittle for the game winner easily.. but he came out slower than usual and got blown up.
like you said, it sounds like he has self awareness and will learn from it
There was a play in 49ers-Raiders on which Brock Purdy didn't throw to an open Tyler Kroft for what would've been a TD and instead threw shorter to Brandon Aiyuk.

'Got you. I agree him being a rookie he'll still make more mistakes especially the mental ones but I think he's in a good place and he's in the right mindset.
Apart from the comparison with Jake Locker, it was a pretty good scouting report.
Oh no he didn't.
Did he just want to find some random athletic white QB that he could throw up there? Because Locker and Purdy are nothing alike. Locker had far more in common with Josh Allen and Trey Lance than he does Brock Purdy. Taller guy, much more developed physically, very athletic and mobile, with an incredibly strong arm, questionable mechanics and very hit or miss accuracy.

I think it's funny how we have his 10 yard split going from 1.55 to 1.65 in that article's RAS score chart. Which one is it? There is a BIG difference between the two numbers.

But I compared elusiveness and ability to throw outside the pocket, which I thought Purdy showed some similarities. Other than that, Purdy doesn't have any closer comparisons.
Purdy and Locker aren't even close if we're looking at college tape. Locker's bigger with a much stronger arm. He didn't run anything close to what Brock ran and Locker was awful as far as accuracy went.
yeah I just don't see the Wilson stuff either. Too each their own though
I love Steve and Jerry, but their homerism can be annoying sometimes. When they are talking about non-Niner related topics they are both on-point, but they can be cringe sometimes regarding our Niners.

Well this is actually really annoying on skip and Shannon cause they totally took what young said and cherry picked it.
Young did say that dirty Purdys play was the same - he said that the thing that really impressed him when Mahommes was a rookie was his poise and composure. He said he sees the same from Purdy.
terrible journalism that I expect from skip but not Shannon.

My best friends (one is a die hard Cowboys fan the other a die hard Giants fan) said after the Washington game:
"The 49ers just found the next Tom Brady situation"
And I have to agree. I love Trey Lance...but Brock Purdy is a Kyle Shanahan QB through and through. He's Drew Brees with mobility. This is a fantastic problem to have.

I was really talking about football IQ. The way he seems the game and also understands all the rules. His poise as well.
Someone like mayfield, I never got the impression of "he looks like a vet".
everyone we mentioned above, still looked like rookies to me (even though they played very good), besides Big Ben, luck, and Purdy.
Big Ben wasn't nearly as good his first year as he would become but I watched just about every Steelers game that year because of my friends - he was so clutch and reliable during that 13-0 start. He finally lost in the AFCC
idk how I forgot about burrow! He's like my favorite non 49er! His senior year in college was the greatest I've ever seen.
I mean it's hard to judge football IQ over 5 games. He looks like he gets it and that awesome. Let's see how it goes though. If I'm gonna go sky high best case comp it's Burrow.
