How is that the backdrop of my argument? I've barely talked about Lance in the last 4 months. God forbid me defending him when he was our QB. It's f**king absurd how mad people are that I defended our franchise QB that we spent 3 first rounders on while he was the starting QB.
And last I checked, Lance only played 1 game, so saying he was the key reason we were 3-4 is absurd. We can't pin Jimmy's performance against Denver on rust when he looked fine against Seattle the week prior. Lance had nothing to do with us getting blown out in back to back weeks against Atlanta and KC. Furthermore, it's absurd to think Jimmy would have won against Chicago when the only games he's played in bad weather he's been terrible in.
Let's not forget that this absurd argument started because someone claimed Purdy saved Lynch, an absurd statement. If you don't believe CMC made a season changing difference, then maybe you should just look at the rest of the roster. Purdy is likely not a national name right now if he wasn't surrounded by one of the best supporting casts in the league. The supporting cast that this FO put together.
So, when people take Lance's side in discussions about his play they are "defending their QB", but when people take Jimmy's side in discussions about his play they are being "homers, fanboys or stans" (whatever that means). Well gosh, I'm glad we were finally able to get that cleared up.
There's a big difference: Trey is still an unknown. No one knows what he's going to be. Jimmy was known, but people were just denying what was clear.

Good thing we have a front office that knows this. We keep both and we don't worry about a QB injury for two or three seasons while we focus our efforts elsewhere while continuing to develop both guys cheaply. We are talking about guys that are both 22 and 23 years old!
Seriously. Thank God the front office isn't stupid enough to trade Trey Lance. It's like people forget we are on our 3rd string QB this year due to injuries.
The "Trade Trey" group dont want him traded for any reason that would benefit the team. It's just personal problems they have with him.
I like Trey a lot. But if we can get a first for him, and use that to draft a RT who we pay $8-$9m/year rather than pay McGlinchey $18-$20m/year, and use the rest to help re-sign Bosa and Aiyuk, it's a win. Plus it gives Trey a chance to develop rather than sit, which is better for him, so it's win/win. If you're truly a fan of Trey then you don't want him sitting the bench for the Niners.
Why does no one seem to understand that we're not getting 8-9 million per year in cap space if we trade Trey? We LOSE cap space if we trade Trey, and even if we wait until after June 1st, we still only end up saving like 3 million due to roughly 5-6 million in dead cap we'd have in that case, which isn't even enough to sign a new back up QB.
Great post, Furlow. I'm with you my brother.
Right! It would have to be a RIDICULOUS offer for us to trade Lance. I've made it pretty clear on here how I feel about Trey but we should definitely keep him if a crazy offer isn't made for him.
he's not a bad QB and would be an excellent backup to have and insurance policy. We have only had one.. ONE season under kyle where our qb made it all year. We need a really good backup option and we have it.

We're not getting a first for Trey though. And we're losing money if we trade him.
I know, a 2nd and another pick or two is the next best thing. You never get back true value for a 1st rounder or any other pick. Just got to get what we can get.
The issue is similar to Jimmy. Teams know we have our QB of the future now, not to mention Trey's clearly injury-prone history.
Still, he's still got that strong arm and speed. So for us the issue comes down to whether or not whatever pick we get is worth the dead cap space, and frankly, you need a back up QB anyway, so I doubt we trade him next year.
I understand the cap ramafications, but think about Trey. He dearly wants a new start, now. Let him go and let him find a new team to continue his career. f**k the cap space.

I get what you're saying but it's still a business. If someone doesnt make us an offer that we think is worth it - then he should stay put.

agree. he won't get playing time here. he needs reps. he cant be 24 with 400 total snaps at qb since high school, 2017

Then, it's going to be Jimmy all over again. Wait for something that's never going to come and he walks for just a Comp 3rd.

I don't understand the cap ramifications. Why would trading Trey not free up cap space? Trades are always different. If a team is not willing to take on his contract, then yeah it makes no sense to trade him.
When Lance started (yes 1 game but after an entire offseason and camp) and Jimmy G. for years, there was always that concern and nervousness that something crazy might happen, even though in the end we were winning games.
Jimmy G. deserves credit, so does Purdy in what he's done in just 6-7 weeks. This offense has consistently scored over 30 points, and the nervousness has shifted to enthusiasm when the offense is on the field. One can't manufacture that feeling.
Purdy has some ways to go, let's see, time will tell.

We would have to pay the rest of his guaranteed money. Which is 11 million. The other team does take on his contract (base salary & bonuses and such) but they weren't the ones who signed him to guaranteed money so they have no obligations.
Reason why CMC only cost us less than a million this year.

We have 2-3 more years of Lance on his contract. I agree that the longer we hold onto him, the less compensation has will get, most likely, but I'd rather have a quality backup if Purdy goes down.

No, Brock has the job, now it's trade Trey and get Brock locked up long term.

Lol I'm just happy that Purdy only cost us $800k-$1M a year on his rookie contract. This gives us SO much flexibility. It's beautiful.

We can't negotiate a new contract with Purdy for at least 2 more years, it's the rules in the CBA when they're on rookie contracts. Have to wait until after the third year - this makes it so people can't hold out after one good year or so.

Yeah, nightmare scenerio, but it would be nice to have Trey, should something happen.
