So what the guy that got SF to the SB and NFCC is now the backup lol. Yeah see how well that goes once Lance has his rookie bumps in the road. It's stupid to even think that's a fair way to go about it for either QB.

Jimmy needs to go start somewhere else and Lance needs the FULL support of the team, staff, and fan base to grow and become the guy he was drafted to be. Let's not even talk about players looking at a $27M backup player on the roster and feeling like they're not prioritizing where they should invest.

Nobody is going to boo trey off the field this year. What you're worried most about is the pressure on Lance with Jimmy behind him. A great qb should be able to thrive with it, like Brady and Montana. Jimmy didn't. If Trey is going to be great, it shouldn't effect him.

It's gonna be Trey's 3rd career start. Brady and Montana were HOF super bowl qb's before having to deal with that. They were proven vets with a young guns coming in behind them. Trey is the young gun with he proven vet behind him.

Pretry sure Montana had deberg behind him, and Brady had Bledsoe behind him when they were young also.

DeBerg had Montana behind him. In 1981 when Walsh made Joe the starter, DeBerg was traded to the Broncos. Joe's backup was Guy Benjamin. Brady replaced Bledsoe when he got injured and Bledsoe never got the job back.
I don't really see it as a realistic scenario other than him being told it will be a straight up competition for the starters job, but that has lots of other negative effects.

That being said I'd be cool with up to $15 million. Still provides some good cap relief and gives us great QB insurance.
Similar to Smith on the bench in last half of 2012 with Kap.

I certainly worry about the locker room situation, and the media/fan base, but if they're winning none of that will be a big deal, and I see them winning a lot next year.
his 2022 scheduled salary seems to be ok if hes starting

But, he's not - he either needs to accept a pay cut or be released.

His current injury guarantee is the very highest I'd go if they offer him to stay with a pay cut. I think that's 7.5 million. That's already high for a backup, and if he's staying, it needs to be as the backup so Trey can cut his teeth.

Players don't just take less money because they are asked to unless there was an incentive in doing so.

The incentive would be that no one wants him at anything near what the 49ers would pay in this scenario.

They'll keep him at 27 mill. They're too scared to let him go to Seattle. Lets just call it for what it is.

I mean can you even imagine? Seattle sweeps us in the division again, but they have Jimmy G instead and hes just handing the ball off and checking down. Lynch will lose his job the next day.

And I am bullish on Lance for the record.

edit:

also, yeah. Hes not taking a paycut just to be a "team guy". That's just laughable. We have an inflation problem in this country. No one should be taking a paycut in any job

I can imagine Jimmy throwing perfectly timed interceptions to Greenlaw and Warner to give us the win.

Re: edit

Seattle is not going to pay him more than we would if he were offered our backup spot. The only way he's not taking a pay cut is if the 49ers decide not to make him.

If Lance sucks, then he has to work through it, or the team figures it out that he isn't the guy. I don't want a plan B (Jimmy). Last thing I want is Lance to struggle, the team puts in Jimmy which prolongs Lance's development - whether it's developing into a FQB or a bust.

I need to know, I need to know
If you think you're gotta leave
Then you better say so
I need to know, I need to know
Cause I don't know how long I can hold on
If you're making me wait, if you're leadin' me on
I need to know

I'm sick of flat foot Jimmy - get rid of his ass as soon as he passes his physical.
