Sounds like a 2 year deal considering the guarantees. One less starter to replace. Corner and RT followed by edge now for needs

I think the free agent market for centers is pretty thin. Who would you have signed if Brendel was allowed to sign elsewhere?
The other options available were either much more expensive (McGovern, Pocic) or not enough better to risk breaking in someone new to the system.
Dj says it all for me. Played well, but not strong enough , and it showed. I guess weight room could help but , well….IDK. Now if gravedigger had just been an OG…and BTW, does gravedigger have any interest in playing both ways?

No way he gets stronger and improves :/
He is 30 years old, and going into his 8th season. It's not like he is a 2nd year player that is suddenly going to benefit from a full offseason in an NFL weight room. So no, I don't expect him to get stronger or improve much in the run game.

Also, let's not overlook the improvement in OL play as the season went along. Let's not overlook the importance of the blocking calls he made that allowed the OL to do what they did.
So, from history, why do you think he has now reached his ceiling?

Great deal for a C that is top 10 in pass pro. I could really care less about his average run blocking because pass protection is a lot more important to keep our quarterbacks upright. We are a good running team no matter what but we've always needed better pass protection.

Does he have interest in doubling his snap count? Probably not. But in a small way he's helping the run game by making it easier to run up the middle against at least 1 team.

glad we got him back, we need some continuity at the position, and he's only gonna get more comfortable there next season. he played well last season

Kyle loves his centers and it's obvious Jake improved enough during the season that Kyle wanted him back. 4 years is a big commitment, even if we have some outs, that still shows how much Kyle values him to want him here for 4 years.

Yeah, that's pretty telling. 4 years IS a large contract.
Given that he's had a pretty unremarkable career until coming here, I would've thought a 2 year contract for the same yearly amount would've been solid.. but 4 years shows what they think of him.

Gives them time to develop a capable replacement and more stability on the line

Good resigning that provides familiarity and a contract that is well deserved for him.

It's not a skill issue or something experience can fix. You don't have to be a starter to hit the weight room. He's got good mobility which helps in pass blocking for sure, but his lack of strength is always going to be an issue on inside runs and short yardage.
