Damn Gray had him beat by 3-4 yards. Trey underthrew it and it still didn't matter. Gonna be a fun combo to watch!

The ball was in the air 50 yards when Gray caught it. The ball was slightly under thrown, but Gray beat Patrick Peterson so badly that it didn't matter. No shade, but you NEVER saw that from Jimmy G.

You never saw Jimmy G underthrow a receiver? What??

No, only an overthrow to E. Sanders

I think he meant we never saw Jimmy G throw deep lol.

Trey throwing a lot of deep passes in the pre season is going to have DCs game plan for our offense all wrong. What'll end up happening is that we haven't even really shown our running game yet and once we do it becomes pick your poison: Load the box and have Trey find the mismatch outside; spread the DBs back and get pushed around for wide open running lanes for our backs.

I just hope the O-Line can provide enough protection for the former.

Good post. Absolutely agree

It's identical to the Jimmy G to Travis Benjamin connection. (At 4:26)

You know Kyle will have a lethal running game. So if the D-Line is legit, the defense will be really good and the Niners will win tons of game.

It's going to be tough to figure out how to gameplan against Lance and the 49ers.

- If you stack the box, Trey is showing he has the capability to kill you deep.
- If you do the opposite and play 2 safeties high, now your front 7 has to deal with the 49ers run scheme without an extra defender in the box.
- If you play a lot of Man, that might work, but you'll need to make sure you have a dedicated Spy on Trey, because he could run.
- If you dedicate a Spy on Trey, that's one less guy to cover Juice or one of the RB's.

Add in the fact that the offense is constantly shifting, and Shanahan is good about calling against opposing defensive coordinators... it's going to be a nightmare once Trey gets going.

Exactly!

Jimmy's issues with the deep ball IMO were related to his lower half and not his arm. I mean even Shaun Hill had a pretty accurate deep ball and his arm was one of the worst I've ever seen. One of the things that made Jimmy so good in short to intermediate passes was adversely the same reason he struggled to throw deep… his footwork.

Trey has shown in a limited sample size that he can launch deep passes without a massive hitch like Jeff Garcia used to do in every drop back. That means he has potential to hit quick strikes and threaten defenses in the deeper parts of the field. I think he's got a ways to go before he's on Jimmy's level in terms of throwing over the middle but he has all the tools that Jimmy didn't.

One trait TBD is his processing speed

It is supposed to be high (similar to mac jones) and one of the reasons we picked him over Fields

If Trey can "see" the field he will leap frog JG easy

In his limited action so far it does appear he is seeing the defense well

He's seeing the defense well because it's running right at him immediately

Another angle.

Agreed if the o line can hold up.
