Yup, and Trent's hindsight was saying if McKivitz would have played instead of Trent, that could have been a W in the NFCCG.

That's water under the bridge, but it seems obvious that McKivitz is the #1 swing tackle

Agree. And yes, he did decent as a sub in game 18 and we got that W. My hope is that we save a ton of draft capital if McKivitz has developed into a quality left tackle. I'd rather spend top draft capital on either another center or guard. (I'm Assuming ShanaLynch will use their top pick for a DLineman again in 2023.)

They need another #1 pick for that LT position. I'm betting they do that in the draft next year. i.e. using either a Round 2 pick (no round 1 picks next year) or a round 3 pick (I think they have three of them next year).

I'm curious about Burford, from the sounds of it, he may have the size and arms to play LT down the line…

Yeah. Looks like hes side arming everything. Yeah it's the cool thing nowadays and everyone is doing it. But sometimes the qb needs to keep his form good. Not just side arm everything. U can even see it in the videos. :/
I prefer he doesnt do that when he doesn't need to. Throw it with good form when he has a pocket and only sidearm when he needs to. It can develop bad habits

If the QB movement/scramble drill is a bigger part of the offense that previously - it might make sense for Trey to stay with that scramble form. For example, those right side boot passes, if they are called say 15% or more times than before - having that scramble form may be more of an advantage than having the pocket passer form.

Good Left Tackles are priceless, and if Burford can be a quality left tackle (if it's according to Foerster and Kyle) that's a ton of draft capital saved. He really looks like a quality Tackle or Guard for sure - according to the draft scouts.

Me, personally, I'd like Burford to be at that center position for the power-gap and inside zone plays. Specially with Trey being so green as a QB, the more power I have at the left side, the better I can run to the left and boot Trey to the right. I think a center that can dominate DT's (or the middle of a defense) is priceless for those RPO type plays.

Wasn't that Zakelj's eventual position (C)? But I think we can all agree that outside of LT, every position is subject to change here.

Haha. You've got a RG playing C, RT playing RG and RG playing RT. Camp.

Whoa, Colton replaces Trent? Hope Colton had developed over the off-season!

If he can be better than TW on 1 leg, that's a good improvement.

Also liked seeing the defense show their support for Trey.

I'm hoping Sermon makes that 2nd year jump. Mitchell, TDP *and* Sermon - that's a deep RB if Sermon's eliminated that hesitancy. Kyle will need that kind of depth for a possible 22 game season.

McKivitz started week 18 last year in a must-win

We won the game, yes. But that was inspite of him giving up 5 pressures.

Haha. Exactly. Same team. Same pressure situation. Same amount of QB pressures. Except TW did it on 1 leg while McKivitz, 2.

I'm betting Trent's mention of being one-legged in the NFCCG is helping Shanahan start McKivitz as Trent has his veteran's day offs.

Last year - Trent was injured towards the last few games, expecting same or worse this year due to his age.

P.S. if 49ers win the 🏆 I'm betting Trent's retiring a la Alex Mack.

Maybe, but like Brady, it's hard to retire when you're the best at your position.

Idk about a 2nd round pick protecting the blindside on a long term basis let alone a 3rd or higher. I hope they have a gameplan.

Agree.

Just reading the scouting reports - Zakelj isn't as powerful as Burford - or so it seems on paper. A lot goes into being a good center, for sure, and I think Zakelj can be a good center with the physical tools he has. But me, if I'm a run first coach, I'd like that road grading power that Burford brings to the run game for the center position. But that's just me.

I mean If the guy pans out and he's good
thten it doesn't really matter where he was drafted. Bahktari when is one of the better left tackles in the game and he was drafted in the 3rd I think. But my expectations are that Williams plays this and next and with the 2024 first rounder we get his replacement

Agree, short term they have Trent. Long term, I like NC's draft and develop program he's proposed for the OLine, which is just like ShanaLynch's DLine development program but instead of round 1 picks -- maybe round 2 level picks. But from here on in, considering Trey and his possibility of being a guy that can be as accurate as Brees and a runner like Lamar, I'd definitely be beefing up that OLine to protect him for the rest of his career.

The team is pretty solid all around and could splurge on high OL picks next year. We will also have Jimmy's cap space to roll over next year
