Weird, because when it came to Q4 in a very important game in playoffs against Dallas last year, Mitchell was the one who was getting carries. He got more carries than CMC, for that matter. I also remember him scoring a TD against Seattle in the same playoffs.
With RBs, it's very simple with Kyle....he either trusts you or he doesn't. Right now it's pretty clear that the only two backs on the team he trusts are CMC and Mitchell (Deebo too but hes a WR)
Mason is playing only out of necessity, on less-than-important downs or cleanup duty in garbage time. Kyle won't trust a guy who is fumble prone.
For Shanahan, I agree that ball security is important.
But I would also add that the ability to run the outside zone and threaten with it are important. When we had Jeff Wilson Jr early last season, he was actually a very productive runningback for us. But he didn't really scare teams on outside zone plays, and our play action game suffered. A lot of what we do is predicated on making linebackers cheat up, opening up crossing routes behind them.
