Well in either case Gipson > Moore and Odom at S

Odom's primary role is on Special Teams. He is just so-so as a safety.

Moore has good potential if he is fully recovered from the injury.

To be honest, Gipson was available to sign at this time because he isn't very good. PFF rated him as "replacement" grade in all three categories; run defense, coverage, and pass rush. Overall, he is what he was signed for - a replacement in case someone better cannot play. Hence, he will get some run against Houston but won't see the field for defensive snaps barring an injury to one of the starters.

This is all true but Odom and Moore is who would be replacing Ward if he's out for some time. Gipson is better "right now" then them for reasons you mentioned and because he has sooooooo much more experience, even much more than Hufanga. With our defense and aspirations; I would feel much more confident trotting a veteran safety out there with TH than Moore/Odom for the time being until Ward is back or as you said; Moore is fully recovered (I think this is who he is though tbh)
To this point, Moore has shown flashes that suggest he can be a more than adequate safety. He has speed, hits hard, he just needs more experience in coverage. Hence, Gipson is a bridge to get us to a healthy Ward and/or a more experienced Moore.

All I think of when I think of Moore is poor open field tackling. Is that an experience thing or an innate flaw? I don't mean tackling form, I'm talking about pursuit angle and breaking down the ball carrier. It's not good imo. With Ward out, I'm looking just to tread water at safety while leaning on the front 7. If a 20 yard catch is given up, fine, don't allow it to be a 30+ yard gain due to YAC.

Well if you are talking passes defended vs missed tackles, I'll take passes defended. In other words, I'd emphasize coverage vs tackles considering our front 7 and the pressure they can bring. Point being, we have several young promising cornerbacks on the team that can cover man while everybody else is in zone - and that might tide us over until Hospital Ward comes back from his Hammy.
The safety room is looking pretty bleak

We agree on Moore's weakness. I want to see how he can do with more experience. He missed a lot of time due to injury. Now that he is getting more run, I want to see improvement in those areas. If not, then we hope Gipson will keep the seat warm until Ward is healthy.

Agree

Always good to have an experienced guy in the wings

Thanks NC for thinking worst case scenario.

but this is forward thinking.. nc could be right.. if you do not have a plan and you stand still. you lose ground

Good call and if he has this injury this early it's SMART to have a back-up plan
He might get to play against his former team week 1. Will that have little extra motivation.

Should, but Week 1 games can be weird.

Our d will dominate but I kinda expect our o to struggle early

Maybe the 49ers aren't content with Odum and/or TMoore. Gipson has been around the block and has been in many schemes. He should pick things up quickly.
Or, this pickup is for a fresh body to play the final preseason game.

I don't think they're content with Moore at all.
Like I said about Dennard and Nkemdiche, this dude is a

Or Dontae Johnson behind them.
