Fields might even be better overall this year because he has more experience and is a better athlete. Lance played in the same condition as the Bears, with a much better team, with top tier WRs and RBs. Still missed easy passes and threw a terrible interception. I do expect that he improves as the season goes on though. His mechanics and his throwing motion is just… ugly. This should also improve overtime though and hope he learns quickly.
Kroft was open in a window. Pettis was standing like a country mile away from any other player. It was pure pitch and catch.
I totally disagree that Fields had a better game. He was total garbage for most of the game. The 49ers secondary blew several coverages, and the team as a whole couldn't stop committing penalties. We handed them the game on a silver platter.
For how bad the OL was Lance actually made plays to get them off the hook.
As for the mechanics, his mechanics are fine. They did a feature on why people think his mechanics suck, and it has to do with a ball hitch right before he throws. It doesn't affect the throw or release time at all, but it makes his release look weird, so people think he's not doing it right. Holding the ball out vertically with two hands, he points it forward horizontally before he winds up. My guess is its a timing mechanism.
The air got let out of our tires the moment Elijah went down. The OL did Trey no favors . Yes Trey has some mechanical issues. Yes there were some crummy calls, one of which #54 slid over the top of Fields on the way out of bounds. That was no foul.
But the most notable among all the above was Trey's incredible inability to not STARE down his receivers. He literally looked at the guy he was going to throw to from the moment he left the LOS. Only thing worse would have been if he pointed at the receiver while at the LOS. Trey is no magician in handing off the ball, like Joe was. He goes thru the motions on QB fakes but really they fool no one. Trey never leaves any doubt as to where the ball is or who has it…or if passing , who it's going to. Kyle can't scheme guys open when Trey is locked on the guys he's throwing to.
Those all seem like things one would expect a NFL QB to come equipped with, but sadly, Trey needs work on not looking down his receiver and being a whole lot better on faking handoffs. He isn't going to be Joe the magician who we watched hand the ball off and frequently, no one knew who had it. But Trey has to work on not telegraphing his pass from the gitgo, and he should work on pump fakes. Lastly, he is going thru the motions of faking handoffs, but with a bit more work, he should be able to make his fake hand offs actually surprise the D on occasion.
OB coach and Kyle have some basic QBing skills they need to teach our QB. Granted, none of this would have won this game. Stupid stupid penalties lost it, along with a fumble (#19) , errant passes, and dropped balls. Coaching up our QB, however, is basic and needs attention immediately. Trey will find a lot more targets open if he works on the basics.
