It definitely is different, and we'll probably continue to see it (see it more?) as players negotiate themselves a little more control, financially... I don't know if it will ever reach NBA "load management" levels but that's the way its trending.
I don't see any way to turn the clock back on that. I do think there may be some other ways the league can react to it--expanding the 53 man roster, for instance. (The expanded practice squad and ability to activate players from it is an intermediate step to this, as I see it). Giving coaches more players to pick from might mitigate the impact to availability that this new culture will probably lead to...
