for whatever reason I thought the dude tore his ACL or achilles. I mean sprains suck and can reoccur but not as bad as what I initially thought.
There's a weird injury narrative out around him. He basically got ran into the ground by Rhule.

Literally all but 1 pick made the roster this year. Don't listen to Cowherd. He's a moron.
That's kind of twisting things to make the draft picks given up seem less important. Obviously the skill positions will be hard to crack as a rookie, but there's always a chance to upgrade depth whether it's OL, DB, or DL with those draft picks. Not having those picks will hurt but if CMC is a stud on the field then it's all worth it.
In the last two drafts we've picked 11 players in rounds 2-5 and Huf is the only one who isn't a backup-level player. Maybe Drake Jackson too... eventually.
What about Aaron Banks?
IMO Banks is a backup-level player that we have starting. He wouldn't start over Tomlinson.
But I'd be happy to be wrong about that one day.
Either way, point is that vast majority of 2nd to 5th rounders are backups so giving up 3-4 for CMC is a steal.

No
Having a rookie qb contract helps a ton
What I want to know is how do they fit his salary into this year's cap? Aren't they barely below the cap? How does that work?

CMC's 2022 cap number is like $660K

#49ers Christian McCaffrey - Long injury history. BUT:
— Deepak Chona, MD. SportsMedAnalytics (@SportMDAnalysis) October 21, 2022
1) There's no anatomic pattern to his injuries
2) They aren't tied to lingering durability risk
3) RBs who catch have lower injury rate per play than RBs who rush
No RB is super safe, but CMC is as good a bet as any#NFL

Here's the current base salaries the #49ers inherit on McCaffrey contract. Note: NONE of his remaining money is guaranteed, could open the door for a re-do or new deal depending on how this year goes:

2022: ~$670k
2023: $11.8 million
2024: $11.8 million
2025: $12 million

I wanted to see Coleman more last week over Wilson and see what happens, but wasn't Coleman on his couch 2-3 weeks ago? If I was betting I'd say they cut Coleman over Mason, since they saved Mason over Hasty/Sermon, plus he seems to be a decent ST player. Coleman would most likely still be available if needed later on, but I like what Coleman brings to the party, so I'd cut Sourdough Sam.

Nice. Shouldn't be any talk about mortgaging the future. Not a lot going on day 2 of the 2023 draft but things look fine for 2024 regarding number of picks.
Now that makes this trade very appealing. Just as long as we don't trade away any picks in our golden rounds 5, 6, or 7. There has been so much bellyaching about our day 1 and 2 picks that those guys don't have much to complain about now.
Only issue…injuries 2 yrs when he played 3 and then 7 games. Just hope he kept that stuff in CAR.
Is our team better? Hell yeah

You do know that Banks has been a better run blocker as well as a better pass blocker than Tomlinson this season, right?
I am not arguing your second point as I agree with you. The draft is a crap shoot and we now have a proven commodity.
I just think that Banks has been getting an unfair shake just because he sat his rookie season. He has actually played well, especially as a pass protector.
